Is the cat alive?

Quantum Physics is not the easiest subject to wrap your head around. Relativity, both Special and General, are relatively easy, at least from the correct frame of reference. There are discreet chunks of information about Quantum Physics that make a lot of sense, but if you try to actually put your finger on them, you find it’s not really intuitive. The uncertainty of the topic puts some off. Like, how can you have a q-bit that is both a “one” (on) and a “zero” (off)? Or better yet, how do you actually use such a beast?

The most important question to ask, though, is, “is the cat still alive?”

I forgot about Pixel – Always wondered why a Schrödinger chose a cat, since we all know cats refuse to conform to any set of laws – except their own – and then they aren’t conforming only expecting you to – i.e. feed them

Since there isn’t an easy answer to that I’ll give you an overly complicated one.

As you know, with Heisenberg’s Uncertainty and probability waves we have weird things happening like this: since the orbit of an electron is just a probability wave until we try to measure it, we can put a “box” that is ‘electron-proof’ in in that orbit, quickly remove that box and trap the electron. So the electron will actually go through that ‘electron-proof’ wall.

OK, Schrödinger came up with his famous cat to show the bizarre concept that things that happen at a quantum level can make things at a macro level become a probability wave.

Then we move to Heinlein who showed that a cat that is a probability wave can walk through walls, particularly if that cat’s name is Pixel.

So, with Heinlein in mind we discover that Schrödinger’s thought experiment becomes moot since the cat can just escape the trap before that single particle decays.

Oh yes, and anybody who’s been around a cat know, it doesn’t matter if the universe exists to the cat or not since it’ll just ignore it anyway. Well, unless it’s time to be fed.

You’re right – just the act of observation would cause the cat to go to one state or the other. I think if I figure out how to draw a cartoon of Schrödinger’s cat without showing both states and yet demonstrating the essence of what his riddle meant I’d become almost as famous in scientific circles as Gary Larson (The Far Side). Almost. Thanks for the comment!

No, no, they can’t do that. As soon as they investigate the probability wave will collapse and the final state of the cat will be determined, perhaps for the worse. Thanks for the comment.

Ah! Schrodinger’s Cat: The Quantum Moggy! Love your drawing! What’s really interesting (to me) is the way that aspects of Quantum Theory are absolutely in line with Ancient esoteric thought. Nice one, Trent.

Thanks Alienora! I’ll have to look into the connections between Quantum Theory and Ancient Esoteric Thought – sounds like a good story there…
