A Bit of Down Time. Maybe.

Chapin Beach

I’ve been away from home since last Thursday afternoon. My vacation started Friday afternoon (I worked from my vacation house on Friday). I’ve been trying to keep up with new posts and reading the blogs I follow, but it’s next to impossible.

I’ll admit, a large part of me would like to be 100% device free when I’m vacationing. Another part of me thinks I should be able to spend a lot of time writing and reading. What actually happens is I do a little reading (sometimes a lot, this time very little) a bit of writing (I wrote 75% of my book while at my vacation house over last summer, but this year it’s slow) and spend time with my brain turned off.

Every day I’ve taken long walks on the beach and longer walks at some conservation land with saltwater marshes and fresh water ponds. I’ve been out on my kayak every day. I’ve been doing work on the house (yes, I know, but it has to be done). I’ve taken hundreds of photos.  I’ve spent some time hanging on the beach and swimming. I wrote and posted a short story (Friday), a post based on two photos (Monday)and a haiku (Tuesday) and just finished a silly post for today (Wednesday). I’ve planned quite a bit. My to-do list is still a mile long.

What do you do on vacation? Do you still post to your blog? Do you get a chance to read those you follow? Do you work on your art at all?

After many years of wishing we just got ours last year. It is great! But that means 1. no spare money what-soever and 2. every spare minute is at the vacation house so no travel.

Thanks! I’ve been doing a lot of bird pictures lately. I think you missed my Eagle and Osprey pictures a few weeks back (hint, hint).

It’s been awhile since I’ve had anything that deserved to be called a vacation, but when I do go on vacation I feel antsy if I don’t get at least some writing done. I can’t relax if I don’t.

I know what you mean, but I also often get into a routine that makes it hard to do anything creative, particularly if I’m doing a lot of traveling.

When I am on vacation, I usually do not get the opportunity to post on my blog or read other blogs. I read my emails, though. I read a lot – thanks to my ebook readers, I take photos with my smart phone, take notes, etc. Afterwards there is a lot to catch up with.

That used to be about the extent of my on-line time until just this last year or so. I still do it that way if I’m traveling. Having a little office in my vacation house is a blessing (as i said, I wrote about 75% of my book there) and a curse (I need to check my blog!). I still have to do a lot of catching up, but not nearly as much as in the past.

When I go on Vacations (aka Summer Camp) I am without internet access. None at all. So it’s not like I have a choice but I will say it is nice to unplug for awhile. I write every day in a good old fashioned paper journal, whether I blog or not. I also read a lot of good old fashioned paper books in addition to reading blogs. I work on my art continuously as my sketchbook is a constant companion to my journal.
So to summarize, nope, no blogging on vacation. :)

No blogging but plenty of creative outlets – good for you. Good old fashioned pencil and paper and good old fashioned paper books are great. I have my sketch pad next to me but my pencil has been silent.

Speaking of that, I thought you were at camp this week. Are you sneaking in a little blog time?

I was at Camp over in Wisconsin for an extended weekend. I’m back for helping with Vacation Bible School this week. Then I go up to Eagle River for another camp after 4th of July.
