A Younger Man’s Eye

Trent's Eye(My Haiku Hai-Tuesday has been preempted by a longer form poem.  A Haiku will return next week)

All those years ago
I looked at her sweet face
With a younger man’s eye
My heart began burning
And I felt such a yearning
That I thought I would die

I didn’t know what to do
So I did naught
I didn’t know what to say
So I only thought
How her arrow struck me true

Then she was gone and I knew pain
Never would this happen
I thought
But it did
Again and again

Looking back now
I see another girl’s face
Watching from the shadows
And I wonder how
I never made space
For this new one in my heart

While in my pain
Did I cause pain as dear?
Am I a cruel man,
Hurting without care?

Just yesterday
I looked into her eyes
With a younger man’s eye
My heart began burning
And I felt such a yearning
I thought that I should die

I’m too old for her by far
So I did naught
My heart belongs to another
So I only thought
Her arrow will leave a scar

Looking back now
I see a tear in her eye
As she watched from the shadows
And I wonder how
I missed with a sigh
That I too had grown in her heart

While in my pain
Did I cause pain as dear?
Am I a cruel man,
Hurting without care?
Or was it just vanity
That my heart only heard
What I wanted it to hear?

If she cared for me or not
The problem I realize
Is that with an older man’s mind
I’d dared look into her eyes

Hope you enjoyed!

This is a beautiful one, It expresses so many things, the ambiguity, the guilt, the regret, the longing, a sensation for another that always stays in out heart irrespective of time or circumstances.. its a lovely poem Trent:)

Thanks Pranita! I read poetry blogs that inspire me to try to say more with my words, delve a little deeper. I’m including yours as one of the ones that inspire me so I’m glad you like it :)

Oh, that is lovely, Trent – and I feel it expresses so much about our assumptions re the other when we fall in love or lust or just have that momentary tingle. Great post! x

Thanks Ali! When we are in love, lust or whatever our brains really don’t function properly. Of course at the time we need our minds to be most nimble they let us down. Thanks again.
