The Magic Wand

Almost exactly a year ago I started work on a picture story, the magic wand.  I posted it May 2, 2014.  However, in ways I like the colorized version better.  If you have time, look at both and let me know what you think.

Magic Wand 1

1. “Where have you been, Edward? We haven’t seen you in days.”

“I’ve been too busy to come out and play. Last week I received a magic wand for my fifth birthday and I’ve been practicing.”

Magic Wand 2

2. “No you didn’t, magic wands don’t exist and if they did, why would you have one?”

“My grandfather gave it to me. He told me that once I learn its uses I can do anything. The magic is strong and will give me power over matter and minds.”

Magic Wand 3

3. “Space and time will be my toys and I’ll create whole worlds and universes. I’ll visit dinosaurs and slay dragons, travel to the stars and serenade princesses.”

Magic Wand 4

4. “The world will be opened by my magic wand. Any place or time will just be a wave away. My grandfather tells me that once I master the wand it will be my ticket out of this two-bit village. That’s why I’ve been practicing.”

Magic Wand 5

5. The other kids pointed their fingers at Edward and laughed.

“You’re so stupid. You don’t have a magic wand. There’s no such thing, they’re just make-believe.

Magic Wand 6

6. Edward smiled as he pulled a pencil from his pocket.

“Which one of you will tell me I can’t create worlds and influence people with this magic wand? Anything I can imagine can become reality.”

I have my magic wand. Do you have yours?

It seems this time around I’m getting more people choosing color. I understand the appeal, but I go back and forth with them.

Very weird – I have my iPod going on random with over 6000 songs – classical, jazz, pop. rock. folk, etc. As soon as I read this Pink Floyd “Any Colour You Like” came up. At least I’m assuming being a British band they used the British spelling ;)

I think when I originally posted them more people liked the pencil but this time everyone is saying color. I like both for different reasons, but I understand what you are saying – there is more depth to the drawings and the magic kind of pops off the screen a little more.

I like the colorized version better. It facilitates us seeing more of the creativity and imagination. That’s the magic wand to me. Creativity. Imagination. Without those, the whole world is black and white.
