If We Were Having Coffee – 11 July, 2015

Coffee

Hello and Welcome!  Come on in and I’ll grab you a mug of very strong French Roast.  By the mug I handed you I’m sure some of you realize I’m on Cape Cod this fine day.  And it is a fine day!  Beautiful, warm and sunny.

Talking beautiful day, it’s not yet lunch time and I’ve already taken a long walk on one of the most beautiful beaches on Cape Cod, taken the dogs for a couple of walks, supervised puppy play and did an over 5 mile run.  I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’m going to do a 10 K run at the end of the summer.  Two weeks ago I was just under 6.5 km.  I’m now up to 8.2 km. I don’t think it will be a problem to push it up to 10 K in 7 more weeks.

It was a very busy week.  Again, not much to talk about, just living.  Well, one thing I can say is I’ve been spending a lot of time playing my keyboards.  Mostly just practicing and playing for fun, but I hope to do some song writing soon.  And not all work and practice – yesterday evening I did a two hour paddle board lesson.  It was fun, though I do like kayaking better.

Blogging has been a bit slow.  I haven’t had time to visit everyone as often as I’d like and I haven’t been as inspired to write new posts as I’ve been in the past.  It’s almost like summer rerun season on the blogging front for me.  Of course i don’t watch TV so I don’t know if they still do summer reruns like they did in the 70s, but I’m assuming….

On Monday I posted a short picture essay of Paris.  It gave me a good excuse to post my Paris video again.  Watch it if you haven’t seen it ;)  On Tuesday I posted a poem I wrote last year looking at Summer from a child’s point of view.  On Wednesday I put up a little tongue-in-cheek post about some of the political arguments I often see in the comments of news articles.  I’m sure you know the type – it doesn’t matter what the article is about, people can find a way to get into political name calling.  I did a Throwback Thursday post about my cat, Bartelby.  It starts with a macro photo of his eye, touches on his award winning painting and just talks about a great cat of the past.  And then on Friday, after a long fiction drought, I posted a new short story.  I’ll admit it was written in last minute panic, but I think it’s fun.  If nothing else it is very short ;)

I also participated in #BeReal, an idea by Hasty Words who had help spreading the word by Lizzi, both on her site Considerings and on the site SisterWives by posting an impromptu selfie on Face Book and Instagram, a selfie to show “the real Trent”.  So, here is that selfie of the “real Trent”:

Trent #BeReal

Here is a quick, maybe not super accurate, recap of this hashtag and movement: A person’s beauty does not come from a professional makeover, from cosmetics, or a haircut, it is something from within. Nor is there a dollar figure we can place on a person’s worth.   We need to see the beauty in people as they are and, just as important, we need to see the beauty in ourselves at any given time, we need to #BeReal. (I meantioned “haircut” because I took this just before going to get a haircut)

So, how was your week?  Anything exciting happen?  If you are in the US did you have a good 4th of July?

Well, it’s been fun having you over!  Thanks for stopping by!  Hope to see you all soon.  I’ll try stop by for all of the coffee shares I can, but it’s going to be a busy day.  There is a lot of sand and water calling my name

The Weekend Coffee Share is hosted by Part Time Monster.  You can join this week’s Coffee Share on her blog or by clicking on the “Linky“.  In fact, I encourage you to click on the linky” to see what’s been going on in the lives of other bloggers.

Thanks Jackie! My blogging routine is going by the wayside – I missed my typical Tuesday post and don’t have anything planned today. Oh well, there are more important things to life than blogging, and right now running is one of them.

I’ve started running again after injuring myself after a half marathon, I’m only managing around 3 k at the moment, and hope to be back to 5 k by the end of the summer. I’m building up the distance slowly to prevent the injury coming back. Sounds like you had a wonderful week I hope this week is equally good.

It was a great week and weekend. I can understand working your way back up slowly to avoid re-injuring yourself. Right now my legs feel ready to take on the challenge of a longer run but my cardiovascular system begins to get a bit overwhelmed, particularly when I’m trying to keep a pace that’s similar to what I was doing when running 5K.

Thanks for stopping by for my little coffee chat. I hope you have a great week!

The #BeReal does seem like such a great idea I couldn’t help joining and doing a little to help promote it. I’m pretty sure I follow you on Twitter so I’ll have to take a look. Thanks for stopping by for the coffee chat!

WTG you with the running, Trent. I know that it’s hard but so rewarding to get up to those higher distances. And thanks for sharing the #BeReal campaign – I really hope more people get involved with it :)

Thanks Lizzy, it is rewarding. I’ve been sticking around 5 K for years and pushing it is great. Your Welcome about the #BeReal campaign. As I said to Conny, I feel the campaign is aimed more at woman than me, since our society and the media do so much to make women feel insecure, but I do want to help out and it is a good message for everyone.

Well, I can come up with of a couple of ways it’s aimed at men without thinking too hard – 1. Although our culture and media does awful things to girls’ and women’s self-image, it also does rotten things with boys and and men, and not just physical. So yes, men need to be real and feel comfortable in their own skin. and 2. I think some men don’t realize or don’t care about the awful things society and media does to women’s self-image, and body image in particular. They, for instance, look at the “sexy Lizzy” picture you posted on FB and say , “Wow! I want to meet her!” while not giving a second thought to your #BeReal photo. The campaign is should help men see that the beauty lies in the person, not in the cosmetics or clothes, and that the “normal” people they see every day can be just as beautiful as fashion model in their own way, regardless of weight or style.

I think we all need a mind transplant sometimes. The culture of reducing people to body parts is so deeply engrained in all of us, and so damaging. OBVIOUSLY there’s an anthropological reason for it – same as how we crave fatty, sugary foods – in the ancient times, it would have enabled our survival and the best chance of proliferating the species (given that fit, healthy, attractive humans are most likely to survive in a harsher environment and make healthy babies) but as with junk food, we need to ditch the junk mindset.

Sometimes we do. I think the reduction of people to body parts, judging everything about a person based on how they look and measuring worth on attractiveness, is awful, but then, on the other hand, when two people have a mutual attraction, is there any better feeling in the world? OK, what they do next might be, but the attraction has to be there in the first place, even if it is an attraction based on respect for mind and “soul” as much as body.

Wohoo just in time for my Coffee, thank you ! ;)

So we’ve got a selfie of ‘Before’ the haircut, now when do we get the ‘After’ one?! :D

My days have been slow too, not as beautiful as yours though. But just getting used to not having to worry about alarms and waking up at night to study, assignments etc.. So just putting my feet up and watching “Chasing Life”, which by the way is a great show ! ^_^

Ah, you have said you have a natural propensity to laziness and you get to practice it for a while ;) I just got back to my main home in new Hampshire, but it was a lovely weekend. The post-haircut selfie? Maybe soon :) Perhaps only on Instagram, though.

Thanks for joining me for coffee! Hope the rest of your break is relaxing!

A bit of down time is great, but perhaps some “active down time” would be good. Of course if it’s like 40 C out, it’s hard to be active… It doesn’t get that warm here!

I love these catch up posts because they allow me to…er…catch up. :) Well done on the running. I have lost the mojo and have done only one 5km run since the last half marathon. :( But it’s cold and wet and dark outside these days. Ick. You’ll romp home in that 10k, Trent. :)

It’s the middle of winter for you, isn’t it? I don’t know what your winters are like, but I know I slow down quite a bit. Of course here it means running through the snow ;) I’m hoping to ramp up to a half marathon by October 2016. There’s one near my cottage on Cape Cod. Glad you could stop by for coffee, even if you had to bring your own ;)

See, when you say you have to run in snow, it makes me feel pathetic. We just get rain. And cold. It dropped below 10degC today!!! (I know, you’re horrified, right?) Half marathon! Go Trent!
(And I really did bring my own coffee before I sat down to read your post. :) )

10 C?! That’s almost perfect running weather! OK, I’d be wearing a sweatshirt. 15 C -is- perfect running weather. No, 15 C and 0% humidity! There is no way i could run in the heat you have to put up with, though I do run in the hills when I’m up in new Hampshire, just not jungle hills like the one run you recently did.

Yes, see, perfect running weather for me is about 20C. 15C is still too cold. It’s funny because I live in the second coldest state in the country. Imagine what a Queenslander or someone from Darwin would think of running in 10C?? Mind you, they’d be good at running in high humidity instead.

Actually 15 – 20 is a great range. A little warmer if it’s not humid. I -cannot- run in humid weather! The other day I went out in about 23 C weather but 100% humidity – I started dripping before I started running. My time was much worse than a few days before when it was about 30C but almost 0% humidity.

I like the reruns. Not just because I haven’t been following you for long so I missed them the first time around, but also because they let me pop into someone else’s world, even if only for a little while. And once in a while, when I am out and about, something I see or hear will remind me of one of the things I saw, heard, or read on a blog from a friend, and it always makes me smile! By the way, I don’t watch TV either. At least not much. I just stream what I want to see, however, I think they now do summer series that are aired only in the summer. At least I’ve seen ads for about four shows now that are only on in the summer as replacements for shows on summer hiatus. So I guess things change.

    Have a super week!

I don’t really do the reruns in the extremes I’ve seen other people do. For the most part I don’t feel bad for reposting older posts since most of my followers have been with me for less than a year. I also understand about popping into someones world for a while. And yes, sometimes I do think of my blogging friends when I see something or hear something. It might remind me of something they wrote or make me wonder what they think.

I know with the 893 different channels that now have series I’m not surprised many put out new shows through the summer.

Hope you have a great week!

It is a great idea. I think it’s aimed more at women than me since our culture and the media does so much to make women feel insecure about their bodies, but I do like to help spread the word – the women you I’ve felt are the most beautiful are the ones who have had meaning in my life, not the ones who could get a job in the fashion industry.

Thanks for stopping by for coffee!
