then-and-now

I bought several sweaters when I first moved to New Hampshire.  I hadn’t really worn sweaters before that, but loved the one wool sweater I did have.  Years later I still have most of those original wool sweaters.  The very first wool sweater that I bought while still in collage is only worn for doing chores around the house, but I do wear some of the others from that era all of the time.  The most expensive of the bunch is the one in picture to the right.  It really didn’t last very long.  For years I kept it in the dog crate so there would be something that smells like me, but I think it has been gone for quite a while now.

I took the picture on the left this morning with one of the original sweaters.  I will not say when the other picture was taken ;) One thing, as you can see I am NOT wearing a turtleneck in the old picture!  These days I am almost always in a turtle neck if it’s cool enough for sweaters.  Here is an old post, Turtleneck Trent.

      I have 4 sweaters I bought in the late 1980s that I still wear! Most of my other sweaters are from the 90s. Some older (but not that old!) jackets and coats, including the leather jacket I picked up in Italy in ’97 that I’ve had to have relined. They’re vintage, not old. (When I was in college I wore a suit jacket my dad bought in the mid-50s. Unfortunately I outgrew it.)

          That’s the other thing – I’ve looked everywhere for a sweater like the one in my recent photo and there is nothing even close. Oh well, I guess I have to continue wearing a 25+ year old sweater since no one will make one I like.

    Your sweaters look good on you!

    I have two hand-knitted woollen sweaters (or ‘jumpers’ in Oz-speak) that I bought from a stall on the side of the road in Romania in 1991. Trouble is, it doesn’t ever get cold enough here to wear them. And, of course, now they’re full of holes. >:( But I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. They’re now in a plastic bag in the garage (with moth balls). Maybe if the weather goes really crazy one winter, I might get to wear them again. :)

      Thanks! The sweater in the picture I took yesterday is even older than the ones you picked up in Romania. Well, a couple of years – I think I got them in ’89. I love wool, but my sweaters soemtimes get holes. Often they’re wear holes, like in the sleeves. Now i keep them in cedar chests all summer, which keeps the moths away and smells better than mothballs!

      You should have brought them to Nepal. Of course you could always go someplace to wear them, like New Zealand (I want to go to New Zealand!)

        Too big and bulky for Nepal. (They have very tight weight restrictions on the internal flights.)

        I was just mentioning to someone that it might be time to take the boys to the snow this year (they’ve only been once when they were quite small). I could get them out for that. :) (Assuming we get any decent snow on the nearest mountains, of course. Never guaranteed.)

      Yes, Tom and I go way back, at least to Risky Business. I think he’s my evil twin or something ;) That’s funny. Of the big stars of my generation he is perhaps the one I’d be the most unlikely to purposefully emulate, but then, looking at that quirky smile in the old picture, I guess I can see it a little.

      20 is about right, though it might be closer to 25 – I’d have to ask my brother – I was at a house that he only lived in for 1 year. I thought I had an older picture of me in the other sweater, the darker gray one I’m wearing this second, but I couldn’t find it.

    I love wool sweaters. I don’t think I’ve ever had a new one. The ones I have are from the Goodwill. Great prices for great sweaters! They are not only warm and durable but they are so comfortable. Oh, the ones I have aren’t women’s sweaters. I like the fit of men’s sweaters better, and the colors most of the time.

      I can understand Goodwill sweaters – they are durable. OK, I’ll admit it, the oldest one I have is about 30 years old. Maybe I should look at someplace like Goodwill – I haven’t bought a new sweater in many years because the ones I like are so expensive!
