While I was working this morning a song came on my IPod, Do You Love Me? from Fiddler on the Roof. I’m going to admit something – I can’t hear any music from Fiddler on the Roof without a tear in my eye. It’s impossible. This song touches me more than most. Since it is almost Valentine’s Day, I’ll share this with you. Oh, the version on my IPod is the original Broadway cast. I like it better than the movie version, but this is still good:
T- I love love love all the music from Fiddler! this rocks – thx for it today!

Fiddler is my favorite or #2 (sometimes I’d much rather hear West Side Story) musical of all times. Sorry Rodgers and Hammerstein. Do You Love Me was perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Yes – perfect for v-day- but also for me even if I was late dropping by- and every song from fiddler is on my top lists – we have seen the musical a few times – but my favorite story with it was another unexpected surprise – like the pink Floyd cd that one day with my son

As I said, I can’t listen to any of the music without a tear in my eye, even the “happy” songs, like the supposed nightmare. I think you stopped typing to early – I didn’t get that last bit.

I am not sure what was cut off! lol – but I think I was just mentioning that story with my son and I jamming to PF. And I also stumbled on this cool pf post recently and will try and come back to share it. I do not always mean to do that – and seriously – why does it seem like I have to keep coming back with comments for T – why is this???? ha !

I sound like you were saying, “just like that time something happened….” but i might have just misread it. And, you know, I just like having you come back and comment all of the time!

It is a great musical. You might not be able to catch the wistful, melancholy music, but the words are powerful too. Sad and yet strangely hopeful.

I love Fiddler on the Roof. My favourite song would be Sunrise, Sunset.

And I’ve just noticed it’s also your favourite. :) It’s so beautiful. I love the harmonies in it and it has such a mournful tone to it.

A sad wedding song… All of the songs are beautiful but have just a touch of melancholy. They are like life and they fit the story so well. But this song – “Is this the little girl I carried, Is this the little boy at play?” “I don’t remember growing older, when did they?” makes you want to turn the sun around for a few years, see that young boy/girl again, be that young boy/girl again….

I’ve known these songs for so many years, my mother LOVES Fiddler on the Roof (We’re Jewish. And Russian!) Very strong emotional ties. Thanks for posting this.

I’m not Jewish or Russian and these songs (and the play and movie) are all so very emotional for me so I can’t imagine how powerful they are for you! I grew up listening to the music. It is all fabulous, by far my favorite musical. (OK, West Side Story comes close.)

I feel the same about Fiddler on the Roof songs. :)

There is something about them, isn’t there? Is it the songs or the context? Perhaps a bit of both – Someone had asked for for Sunrise, Sunset to played at my wedding’s reception. It had been years since I had heard it so I listened. I put a stop to it – I did not want to cry at my wedding and I would have if it was played!

I adored the movie version. Never saw it performed on stage, though.
Thanks for sharing this song!

I do love the movie and have never seen it on the stage, but the CD that I have (and iPod) is the original Broadway cast. There just seems to be something more immediate about the Broadway version. But both are great!

I don’t like musicals so I’ve not seen this one, not even the movie. However, I have heard the sing and I do like it. Sometimes, in the middle of daily life, we forget the important things and the reasons we do things. That’s what this reminds me of.

This is different than most musicals. It is bittersweet, about changing times and ideals and is set during a time of great persecution of the Jewish people in Russia. I’m sure you’ve heard other songs, Sunrise, Sunset being perhaps my favorite. I’d suggest trying it, but I’d have to warn you that it is very, very long, so if you don’t enjoy musicals, well…
