I remember, in my youth, coming across patches of three pedaled white flowers, the beautiful Trillium, and knowing it was Spring. The special allure is a treat only of memory and the past, for the flowers aren’t to be found in New Hampshire.
On the wooded hill behind my house are patches of little plants. Velvety dark tri-pedaled flowers have appeared at the top of their stems. They are still Trilliums, just a different sort. Pretty, but to be left alone, Stinking Benjamins are not to be sniffed lightly.
A few years ago I noticed them but just that: noticed. This year, though, it is far more. They are everywhere up on that hill and I’m up there a lot, trying to keep the dogs out of trouble as they blaze trails up and down the almost vertical wall. The dogs don’t care and run at full speed through the small flowery patches. I, however, stop and look at the delicate beauty and know: It is Spring!

Very pretty little flowers. I think they are what grows at a nearby park. I’ll have to check them out when I go later this week.

They are very pretty. I know there are several different types of trillium across the country so it’s possible if it isn’t the exact same one it’s still a type of trillium.

I had not known trilliums have a red and pink version until I started to do some extensively hiking. They are relatively rare to find amid their white neighbourhoods and I guess that’s why they tend to stand out more.
The trillium is Ontario’s provincial flower and is protected in public lands.

I grew up in Ohio and all I ever saw were the white ones. I didn’t know there were red ones until the first time I saw one in my back yard. As a kid I always thought they were protected in Ohio but when i did my 5 minutes of research before this post I didn’t see Ohio mentioned as a place that protects them.

Thanks! You might not be able to tell, but the flowers are very small – I had to lie down on the ground to get the pictures.
