When we moved into our house there wasn’t much of a backyard.  There had been some ancient gardens, but somebody had come in and removed all of the flowers as the team was rehabbing the house.  Oh, I’m sure you don’t know the story of this house.  Well, that will have to wait another day.  What’s important here is that there was some very old landscaping still there, but for the most part the back wasn’t useful.

I had tried to dig out the rock hard dirt in the part of the yard against the house to make some sort of patio but gave up.  Eventually we hired somebody to do that.  And then we had the drive done, some short stone walls put up, a little landscaping, gardens put in and other such things.

I would say our backyard is the best part of our house and lot.  It looks onto a wooded (very steep) hillside.  There are a few levels of lawn going onto the hill and a lot of flowers.  It is on the north side of the house so it is cool in the summer.

On the fourth of July we ate out on the back porch for the first time this year.  I’m not sure why we waited so long.  From now on we’ll eat out there any day that’s not raining up until it’s too cold.  I cook most of our meals on the grill through most of the year and have to in the summer – our kitchen is one of the hottest rooms in the house even when we don’t cook in it.

It was so nice to sit out back and relax, looking off into the woods.  It made me smile.

That’s my smile for this week, relaxing in the backyard.

What made you smile this week?

If you haven’t seen it, here is a little background to The Weekly Smile as well as some quick guidelines.

So, what made you smile this week? Write about it and post on the link-up (or click the little blue frog below). While you’re there, read what everyone else is smiling about! And come back to it later, if last week is any indication new smiles will be added daily!

I have a front porch that, when I had it built, I imagined I would sit and eat there. I did. Twice. I keep thinking I am going to clean it out…the kids have toys there and that’s where a lot of things collect. If I ever do, I want to sit there and eat and it’s a great place to sit and read and enjoy being outdoors (well, almost outdoors because it’s enclosed).

Thanks! Part of the whole “Weekly Smile” is about appreciating the small things. Sure, sometimes I write about major things that happen, but more often it’s about every day things.
