It has been a hot Summer. I am not a hot weather person. OK, after a while I do acclimate and can actually run and do other activities when it is hot (if not too humid), but there are limits. Sleeping is one of those huge limits – I do not sleep well in the heat.
I don’t have AC in my house in new Hampshire. Why should I for the handful of uncomfortable days? Well, this year it was more than a handful. Still, most of the time I was OK. I still slept, if not great, with fans running all night. But there were a few weeks when it stayed hot and humid all night and even fans weren’t enough. There have been too many sleepless nights!
The last few days, even though we hit a high in the mid 80s F (27 – 30 C) it got down to the 40s F! (8 or 9 C). Perfect sleeping weather! Sure it’s a bit cool, but that’s what blankets are for. And the house was still in the 70s F (20s C). I sleep next to an open window, so even if it was warm inside, I still had that cool air blowing on me. Heaven!
So that was my smile for the week, weather cool enough to sleep!
What made you smile this week?
If you haven’t seen it, here is a little background to The Weekly Smile as well as some quick guidelines.
So, what made you smile this week? Write about it and post on the link-up (or click the little blue frog below). While you’re there, read what everyone else is smiling about! And come back to it later, if last week is any indication new smiles will be added daily!
–-
Note – the weekly smile runs Wednesday Morning to Wednesday morning. I post in the morning (Eastern US) and put up the link usually between 7 and 8 AM EST. I also try to post on Sunday as a reminder. People can and do join throughout the week.
Mine is the opposite- weather warming up. Glad you are enjoying cooling down though.

Even though your winters aren’t as bad as the ones here I’m sure spring is well appreciated!

Hi Trent,
It’s interesting reading your post. We have air-con in our lounge room but the heating in our house is very makeshift because like your heat, our cold tends to last a week or so and that’s it. I am a big user of my electric blanket and love baking myself with that on. I usually need a daytime nap and it’s beautiful. Our houses here are built to be cool in Summer rather than warm in winter. We do have a combustion heater but can’t use it as it irritates my lungs.
Yes, I’m also smiling in September. I love the inbetween seasons which just fit so comfortably…like a glove.

Up here in New Hampshire we see a lot of extreme cold – weeks on end that never get above freezing. So yeah, that’s where it’s needed here. Down south a lot of houses are built for the heat, and even on Cape Cod, but our cottage has low ceilings and small windows. It was built in several stages so air flow was not consideration. On a “cooler” summer day (mid to high 20s C) it will be several degrees warmer inside than out and very humid.
The changing seasons are great and, as I’ve said many times, autumn is by far my favorite time of year.

Spring and Autumn are a toss up for me. Auttumn isn’t as spectacular here as it is in New Hampshire. Not a lot of deciduous trees and colour.

I can relate to not being able to sleep through hot nights. I live in south Florida and it can get very hot and humid here. There was no AC at my parents house and there were nights when it was difficult to sleep despite fans. Thank God I do have AC in my house now. Phew! That makes me smile. :D

If I lived in south Florida even I would have AC! I’m not a big AC fan, but when you have to have it, you have to have it. Actually, my cottage on Cape Cod has it. It wouldn’t be need in most houses, but the cottage gets very stuffy very quickly, and with the high humidity, on occasion I’m glad it’s there!

I’m not a huge fan of AC either. I prefer cool fresh air, but the heat down here is intolerable at times, so I have to have it. :)

That’s why I live up in New England ;)

Hi T – I agree- the September weather is something to smile about – and just an idea – but they do have small AC units that might be worth getting – :) and it could be really nice – anyhow, I am super grateful for AC – even though I was just reading a quick article about how AC might be leading to people spending too much time indoors and in the long run = robs them of their vitamin D – and in a way that supplemental vitamin D cannot replace – something about the vitamin D we make and the skin stimulation from the sun….
and then I know others who say the controlled air robs people of needed sweat – hmmmm
all I know is that when we lived in CA we did not have AC and a few days it was miserable – ha!

I have a small unit in my home office as it is by far the hottest room in the house (or the coldest, depending on season). I the house is 80F it will be 95F in the office! But in the bedroom? I’d never sleep – I hate the feel of air-conditioned air when I’m trying to sleep. i know, I know, but I never had it growing up so it just feels awful. And in the past, why have it for the 5 or 10 days it’s needed? But then there was this year!

I clicked “like”, but I don’t – I do not see any of your comments here. I checked “spam” and the messages aren’t there. I’m not sure what happened. I guess Word Press doesn’t love you today :(

Ugh..now I even forgot what I had commented. Maybe it was something along the lines of how amazing it is that you managed to find something to smile about even in the smallest ordinary of things which is a great quality to have :)

Part of life is smiling at the ordinary things ;)

Yes I wish more of us could incorporate this thing in everyday life :)

More should. By its very definition, “ordinary” makes up the bulk of our time on this planet and if we can’t appreciate it, enjoy it and smile about it, life will be very hard. :)

Glad you got some sleep. I got a smile when I chatted to a friend I had not spoken to in awhile. I also wrote apoem that came with ease for the first time in a while. (TWO actually! WOW)
I also got to make my kid smile by managing to pull getting, not one – but TWO outfits for school sorted in minimal time….which ofcourse – a smiling kid – ALWAYS makes me smile :)

Chatting with a friend is always good :) A few days ago I chatted with a friend I hadn’t talked to in a while and, yes, I did smile.
I saw the poems you posted on your blog. Very nice!
And I saw your kid’s outfits on FB, bot the hand drawn one and the “Walk Like an Egyptian” one. Very creative. And I’m sure the smiling kid made for a smiling mother!
Some very good smiles there from a very busy lady.

Here it’s Spring but today it still felt like Winter.

Here Winter has a a way of lingering on for a long time – we often have snow on the ground up through the end of March or even early April in a bad year. But then we have touches of Summer up until October, so it balances out. But the Summer in September and October have those cold nights, which I love!

Very fickle seasons all over the world, there’s no doubt about that. Parts of our state are actually in flood at the moment.

Yes, weird weather all over, but what I described in the last comment are the “typical” or “normal” seasons around here – cold wet spring with winter not getting the hint and moving on but then very pleasant autumns with warm days and cold nights. Summers usually aren’t too bad (but this year was different!) but winters can be awful (this year, again, was different – not as cold as usual).
