Lunch on Saturday

9-24-2016-boston-harbor

So, wandering around the water front after touring the Harpoon Brewery we decided to have a relatively late lunch.  As long as we were going to have lunch we decided we’d go in style so went to Legal Harborside.  You wouldn’t think there would be a problem with 3 floors of dining and with us running a little after noon, but when we got there we found a wait for the dining room.  Well, a table off to the side in the front windows was open with no wait.  No great view of the harbor, just a city street, but still, we had a table and we could eat.

I had noticed a lot of police on the way up to the door but I didn’t think about it.  As we sat we watched more and more police and then we noticed some Secret Service people.  OK, who could be coming?  If it was the president or either of the two candidates I don’t think we’d get in without a security check.  I looked around and saw some photographers on the stairway to the second floor intermixed with secret Service (I have seen Secret Service quite a few times.  I know what they look like and can tell them from a body guard trying to look like Secret Service.)

So the first motorcade comes up.  A bunch of people climb out of one vehicle, obviously journalists.  And then someone steps out of one of the vehicles, a black Mercedes SUV.  A phone shot through the window shortly after he stepped onto the sidewalk in front of the restaurant….

OK, so I recognize this guy.  I’ve actually seen him a few times before.  If you don’t know who it is, that’s the US Secretary of State, John Kerry.

That motorcade drives off.  Another shows up a little later (I think they may have used the same cars….)  I didn’t recognize the person in that Mercedes SUV.  Not did I the next.  But the next guy is very familiar, I see him all of the time on the BBC news web site.  It is Boris Johnson, the Foreign Minister of the UK.  At least one other motorcade showed up after Boris, maybe two.  I read later that the foreign ministers of France, Italy, Germany, the EU and the UK were all in Boston, so I assume they were all at this little late lunch.  They were in the US to attend some big UN meeting in NY but went up to Boston for the day.  I’m sure Syria was a topic of discussion….

Anyway, I didn’t get to meet any of them ;)  But I do know why there was no seating on the 2nd or 3rd floor.  It’s not every day that you get see a handful of high level international politicians.  Or at least it’s not every day for me.  Made for an interesting lunch.  And you know, I think we had a much better view than those who only got to look at the harbor ;)

Sometime the “cheap seats” are the best seats just for the show ;) (Did you ever see “Chasing Amy”? There is a cameo by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck about the cheap seats being the best) It was kind of cool. Of course, no seats at Legal Harborside are cheap!

The movie is a Kevin Smith movie, perhaps the most “serious” of his New Jersey series (none of them are serious, well, on the surface) and explores sexuality. If you’ve never seen a Kevin Smith movie, there is a LOT of swearing and no subject is taboo.

How exciting, Trent! Not just because of who you saw but all the theatre surrounding their lunch…obviously not your average Joe.
I loved how you said you could spot the Secret Service guys. We watch NCIS and the agents go out there and sometimes they get picked and they ask “How did you know?” From my experience, they drive those big black vans. Other than that, they could’ve been parked in my street and I wouldn’t be the wiser.

I don’t know if you saw my Thursday post. In it I talk about another encounter with John Kerry and the Secret Service. That time i thought it was the mob! Two big black Lincolns pull up, one from either direction, and men with guns jumped out of the cars. I thought it was a hit! But I’ve seen and talked to quite a few Secret Service since then and there is just something about the way the hold themselves….

They can be very intimidating – which is part of their job. “You want to mess with him/her, you mess with me first. You don’t want to mess with me….”
