Yesterday I went out on the kayak. It was cold and windy, but I was dressed for it. In fact, I was a little over dressed and sweated a little. I stayed out about 45 minutes, so not a long paddle, but it was more than just getting in the boat to say I was in it, I actually did paddle. i saw two Great Blue Herons, a family of Mute Swans, a few Cormorants, some Baffle Head Ducks, some Canadian Geese, etc. So there was activity out on Swan Pond.
The thing that made the paddle so special is that it was my first, and most likely last, paddle for December. And why is that special? Because in 2016 I was out on the kayak for at least 30 minutes every single month. Yes, I paddles in January and February this year! In Massachusetts (Cape Cod). Every month! To me that is very cool. As December went on and we had unseasonably cold weather I was beginning to doubt it would happen, but then we had a stretch that, no matter how cold it was up in New Hampshire, it only dipped below freezing a bit. So I made it!
That’s my second smile for this week, against all odds kayaking in late December to give me at least one full paddle every month this year!
What made you smile this week?
If you haven’t seen it, here is a little background to The Weekly Smile as well as some quick guidelines.
So, what made you smile this week? Write about it and post on the link-up (or click the little blue frog below). While you’re there, read what everyone else is smiling about! And come back to it later, if last week is any indication new smiles will be added daily!
Note – the weekly smile runs Wednesday Morning to Wednesday morning. I post in the morning (Eastern US) and put up the link usually between 7 and 8 AM EST. I also try to post on Sunday as a reminder. People can and do join throughout the week.

Thanks! I haven’t been doing enough drawing lately and need to get back into it. Thinking of ‘art”, I did talk about drawing in my week 52 part 7…
Both drawing and kayaking are great hobbies!

Congrats, Trent! It’s small goals like this that seem to take on so much importance over time. Glad you were able to get that last paddle in before the end of the year :)

I can imagine the quiet. Only the sounds of the water lapping. Fresh cold breeze blowing in the face, into the lungs. Breathing life! : )

It was great to be out. Unfortunately the wind was a little more than just a breeze ;) Still, it was great, as you said, breathing life!

*giggle*. Okay, so you weren’t living the romantic version I was imagining.
I have decided, if you’re breathing hard, life is good! : )

It was peaceful in it’s own way – having the little lake to myself and the birds, so your romantic version was true in that. I did do a little sprint, so breathing hard, and life was very good :)
