Chick swings the Savoy

Just take the A train

Although the Depression put a damper on the Harlem Renaissance, the music scene continued to flourish. Chick Webb’s house band at the Savoy took on all comers and was only beaten for “greatest swing band” by Duke Ellington.
Thinking of Ellington, when he invited Billy Strayhorn to visit him in his house in Harlem for the first time, part of his written directions where to take the A train. The rest is history….

The image at the top is actually from 1958. It is a photo a lot of jazz greats from the 30s through the 60s. I posted a story about a documentary about the photo shortly after the great Horace Silver passed away – he was one of the last survivors of the day the photo was taken.

Trent, this was an excellent Haiku. It could have been part of a song even! I loved it and was glad to see you write about the Harlem Renaissance. YOU ROCK! <3

Thanks Colleen! Even though I see it mainly from the side of great music and not all of the other things that were going on, I couldn’t resist writing about the Harlem Renaissance.
