Cardinal
The sun warms my blood
My heart beats an earthy tune
My soul hums your name
We celebrate the season
A hymn of praise for spring’s love

This was written for Colleen’s Weekly Poetry Challenge. The key words today were “Sing” and “Celebrate”. Following her suggestion, I didn’t use the words, I used only synonyms.
This week I decided to do two. They’re small ;)

We have a lot of those little red finches these days. Did you know that these wild finches were kept caged in pet stores and when doing that became illegal, they just let them free … and now those originally southwestern finches are everywhere. We have a pair of them nesting in the maple tree in front of the house.
We also have a cardinal. You only get ONE male cardinal. Two cardinals is called “an Air War.”

We do see some cardinals around here, but not the finches. I took these photos at my parents house in Ohio. The bird population is slowly shifting north, so I won’t be surprised if I do see the finches show up some year. I have heard that the house finch isn’t native to the east part of the country. There was another similar finch that was pretty much displaced by these ones.

I love both of your poems, Trent. I feed the house finches and enjoy their songs. Happy May Day! <3

Thanks Colleen. I don’t see house finches very often in New England, but they are all over around my parents house in Ohio, which is where I took both of these photos.

We get Red-Polls out west, too. Very finch like. If it ever warms up I’ll try to get some photos. :D

Thanks. The bird feeder at my parents house has the perfect lighting for photos like these for about an hour every day, at least in late May when I visit.
