If We Were Having Coffee on the 4th of August, 2018

Coffee in NH with Moog

Hello and Welcome!  Come on in out of the rain.  I know, the house doesn’t feel any drier, does it?  It is pretty humid and has been all week.  At least it’s cooler.  We had a couple of 90 degree days in there.  And we’ve had a lot of rain.  Wet, hot, sticky, yuck.  But, hey, it will dry off tomorrow and get into the upper 90s by Monday.  Don;’t you just love summer?  And the funny thing is, I know i can’t complain because so many of you are having it much worse!  And were is this paradise that is only in the 70s today?  Some of you may recognize that mug and synthesizer at the top of the page as being in New Hampshire.

Yeah, work was busy this week.  Next subject ;)

Halley-book-in-hand

I have the “final” version of The Halley Branch in hand.  I also took all three of my books over to the library in town and donated them.  They will be placed in the “new arrivals” section for a while before moving to the “Local Authors” section.

all-three-books

I had been planning a run to Home Depot for a while and made it on Wednesday.  Short version of the story is that years ago I decided to get a cordless electric mower.  I have a ton of reasons, which I may write about later.  The mower was great, if a little cheap.  It is beginning to wear out.  The last time I used it, it made an awful noise as the blade spun up and slowed down, but it didn’t make it as it was running.  Time for a new mower.  SO, with some research and all, I discovered that the current best cordless electric mower is from Home Depot.  I also needed a hose, since I had to cut the end off of mine to make it usable… And then, right before I left, I made a discovery.

hornets-nest

If you can’t see the photo, it is of a bald-faced hornets nest.  It is on the side of my house.  Bald-faced hornets, actually a type of yellow jacket and closer to a wasp than a hornet, are super aggressive.  When Fiyero was a puppy he was stung many times by hornets before I discovered the nest.  I didn’t want him to go through it again, so I got some spray while I was at Home Depot.  I’m sorry.  I don’t like to kill things.  But sometimes you have to.

I’ve been doing a lot of editing of short stories.  Not fun, but something that must be done.

Listen to it out there!  I just pulled up the radar.  We are right at the edge of the dark red.  It’s going to get worse before it gets better…

I don’t take many selfies, but decided to do one this week just to prove that I am a real person ;)

selfie-2018

That’s about it for now.  Thanks for stopping by!  I know it was all about me, but if you have a coffee share i will try to stop by and we can make it all about you :)  Have a great week!

he original Coffee Share kind of died out, but it has been revived!  Eclectic Alli is hosting a coffee share.  This week’s share is here. and the link up is here. Come on and join in!  Hopefully we can bring it back to its former glory!

Just as I was about to post this, I guess we are in the dark, dark red part of the radar display now…  Man, it’s like hammers on the roof!

Thanks for the coffee! I hope the new mower works great. That hornets nest is huge! I’ve been slightly scared, and much more careful than usual, after the yellow jacket attack a few weeks ago. Be careful my friend.

I’m pretty sure the hornets are all dead. Looking at Wikapedia, these are called hornets, but they are more closely related to yellow jackets. Anyway, I’ll bundle up just in case (no exposed skin) and remove the nest later today before it is too hot – I’m working from home.

If some are not dead, you’re more likely to get stung during daytime. They are very unlikely to move at all during the night, and early morning hours, even if there happen to be lots of them in the nest. Be safe :)

I might try in just a few minutes – it’s been dark for about an hour. But first I’ll have to make sure I can see what I’m doing ;) If I can’t I might wait until early morning. Thanks :)

You might want to get a professional to take down that nest. It’s a big one and the wasps come back. The ONLY thing they seem to be good at is killing gypsy moth caterpillars. Otherwise, they are just mean little buggers!

They can be aggressive, though these ones left us alone. I just couldn’t have them that close! I’ve taken them down before, but this one is built really tightly onto the shutter, so I might need help. It is also uncomfortable to wear the heavy clothes I have been when I’ve been working around the nest – it’s warm out there ;)

Yes, I am a real person ;) Actually, I don’t remember seeing many photos of you until all of the Paris photos. I know there is your icon picture. So it was nice seeing that you are a real person as well. (Of course I also just like seeing photos of Paris…)

Hornet or wasps are miserable. We went camping this week end and they were really bad. I got stung, silly thing got caught in my hair I think. My son got stung last weekend and it was stuck in his earlobe, and they were very interested in the dog. It is interesting how some summers are different then others in terms of bug presence. Anyway, great coffee post. Thanks for sharing.

I haven’t been stung in ages, but my dog seems to get it too often, poor thing. Yeah, it would be awful to have them being that bad while camping.

Nice having a virtual cup of coffee with you and nice knowing that you are indeed a real person, which I kind of suspected you might be. I’m not sure where it is off the top of my headbut somewhere I have a photo of a boat called Tenacity but the the way the seam in the back of the boat is placed it looks like Tena-city 😂😂 (Tena being my name – and no the e is not short, it’s pronounced with a long e.)

Thanks for stopping by :) I’m sure most knew that I was real. I hope. But I did want everyone to have some idea of what I look like these days. I’ve seen books and blogs that had the type of play on words you were talking about with Tena-city. If done right it can be pretty clever. Have a great week ahead!

It is difficult to get a two way conversation going in a blog post, so it pretty much has to be about me. on the other hand, that’s what comments are for ;) I did see the Trent sign.

Oh, and I did get into some chemical warfare and took care of the hornets. I haven’t taken the nest off of the side of the house yet, but I will later today.

That hornet nest definitely had to go! Last summer there was a wasp nest underground in the front yard. We didn’t know it was there until they attacked me and Spencer. Poor little guy got close to twenty stings; I got about eight. Not fun. This year I bought six cans of spray when they went on sale. We’ve gone through two. They seem to love building nests in my front porch, usually right by my front door so as sin as I see activity there, I soak the nests with the spray.

I hope the storm doesn’t cause damage! We were supposed to get rain on Monday and Tuesday but the forecast now says no rain. Instead the temperatures will be in the upper 90s and low 100s. Not yay. Have a great week.

I’ve had the underground nest on my back patio area a few times. Typically it is the dogs that bare the brunt of their aggression. I’ve also had them somehow get into the walls of the house. not good. This was kind of out of the way, but it was still just too close…

There was some damage to people’s yards – rutting and such – but no major flooding. 90s and 100s – yow, too hot. It has just been a hot year everywhere.

I hope you are OK. I saw a couple of your posts on FB. Sounds scary.

Hey, Trent! Nasty old hornets, stinging your dog! Obviously, it called for war. I may have said this before, but I really like that book cover. Good idea, donating the books to the library! No Coffee Share for me, I just got back from St. Augustine Beach. A last hurrah before I am back to teacher duties Monday. Have a great week, and best of luck with the storms.

I Hope you enjoyed St. Augustine! Monday? that seems pretty early. I think the kids around here start a week before Labor Day, so the teachers would start in maybe, what, two weeks?

I did engage in chemical warfare against those nasty bugs… I think I won this round.

      Thanks!

I hope you have a great week, even if it is a return to teacher duties.

I have put my voice up once or twice. My singing voice I should say. It isn’t very good, which is why I’ve only done it once or twice ;) I once did a pencil drawing based on a selfie and then put in the computer and colored it in PS. That’s were my avatar came from, so it should be a little closer to “me” than an avatar created using a program.

I hope you have a great week.

These guys can be beneficial, eating “pest” bugs, and will leave people alone most of the time. but they get super aggressive when they feel the hive is threatened. And with the hive attached to my house… Yeah, I couldn’t risk it. Oh well, I’ve taken out other hives in and around the house, so it isn’t the first one.

It’s now hosted by Eclectic Ali. I have a link on this post. Some weeks there are well over a dozen participants, but so far there are just 4 this week. A lot will join up on Sunday. Some of the same people as before, some different people.
