If you follow my blog you have most likely seen quite a few photos from Cape Cod, though I have been awful about them lately – I have several thousand photos going back to June that I haven’t even looked at! I don’t however, post many photos of the natural beauty of New Hampshire.
On Saturday I decided to get out of the house for more than just a long dog walk. There is a trail close to my house that goes by three waterfalls. the trailhead is a five minute drive, and the closest fall, Lower Purgatory Falls, is about a 10 minute easy hike from the trailhead. I have written about the falls a few times – my favorite is here (click if you want to see some of my best waterfall photos ;) ). Saturday was cold and a storm was threatening, but it was worth it! I only went about 15 or 20 minutes beyond the Lower Falls, but it was still a nice small hike (between 30 and 45 minutes).
The waterfall was covered in ice.
There was ice everywhere, which is one reason I turned back – I occasionally had to bushwhack around where water had flooded the trail and froze. Others had been before, so I could follow their tracks.
New Hampshire is very beautiful and I do not take advantage of that beauty enough. My smile this week was a short hike to a very beautiful place.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

“There are days I go in search of the kind, compassionate, loving and beautiful. Despite what we sometimes see on the news, FB and elsewhere, there is much more beauty in the world than ugliness, much more kindness than hate or cruelty. Perhaps we should all have a goal to make at least one person smile every day.”
***
When I used to do a monthly compassion post, this was my theme:
Empathy is the glue that holds society together and compassion is what makes a group of people a civilization. Without holding our hands out to our fellow humans we become savages. We are all in this together, in a closed system, so we must all help each other. How lonely life must be for those selfish people who don’t realize this simple truth! How lonely for anyone who doesn’t realize that all are our brothers and sisters! How lonely must the self-righteous be!

It is a great place to visit in the winter – not many people, no black flies and beautiful ;)

Trent this is beautiful! Congratulations for appreciating the beauty of this hike. The frozen waterfalls are stunning. I’m with you – I find a big smile in nature. :)
I linked my Money Mondays this week to your Weekly Smile. I found a big smile in a fall I took when I was running. (Now, that’s being able to see the blessing!)
Have a great rest of your week, Trent.

Thanks Debbie. the first time around with the Weekly Smile I did two posts a week and I would say a good half had to do with being outside, whether a walk on the beach, playing with the dogs, hiking in the mountains or whatever, I’ve been trying to do a little more variety this time ;)
Falls running can be nasty. I’ll be by in a bit to take a look.

LOVE your waterfall pictures, both those frozen this week and your summer shots too! I haven’t figured out how to get that flowing silky water yet…but I will…..need to find a waterfall too, to practice on.

Thanks! Having that practice waterfall helps ;) I’m sure you know, the key is to get as slow of a shutter speed as possible. I typically put my camera in Aperture priority mode and use as small an aperture (big fnumber) as possible. With my “new” (for that post) camera, I was also able to set the ISO to 64, which helped me get even slower shutter speeds than usual. The in-camera image stability allowed me to hand hold all of the shots. the winter photos were taken with my phone, so just point and click ;)

I have to go see how low I can get the ISO. Assumed 100, but you’re right this new camera might (probably does) go lower. I have been shooting in Aperture priority since my last camera class, and like it very much. There are a lot of waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula, I’ll have to use this as an excuse to go back up there this summer.

Any excuse to go to the UP is a good excuse :)
