The place buzzed with activity. Everyone was on a mission, working harder than I had ever seen.
What had changed in the six months that I had been at our field office in Dubuque? Headquarters was known for being a bit laid back, lax even. They kept an easy pace.
Now it was different.
And it wasn’t that they were working harder, everything was coordinated. The employees seemed to be dancing as they moved around the building, acting as a single organism. Hive mentality at its best.
I first noticed the antenna on Jeff.
And then I saw the nest.

So the first thing I saw was the hornets’ nest and the first thing I thought was that this building looks like a giant, stone annex to that nest, so the rest was filling in the blanks….
Eww! That sent chills up my spine!

Don’t worry, it doesn’t seem quite as disgusting after you’ve been assimilated into the hive ;)

What a fantastic idea. I loved it. Loved the understatement of the punchline at the end too.

Thanks. With these 100 words stories I often put a lot of emphasis on that last line, even if it is an understated emphasis.

Great interpretation of the photo prompt, Trent.

Busy as bees. Well done. I’ve been watching old Twilight Zone episodes and that’s what it reminded me of…normal into the abnormal.

Yep, they are busy as bees in that place, it just keeps buzzing with activity. It is a little Twilight Zone like. Thanks.

I like the idea of insects taking control as long as it stays fictional.

There are times I think they’d do a better job of “running the world”… Of course, I also like the idea of individuality, so it might not be for the best.

Yeah, we get enough money control via tv and social media.

Oh what fun. The hornet queen directs them all. I’d be concerned when they start chewing paper…

On the plus side, I’ve heard that the CEO has been relentlessly pushing Congress to study the current decline in bee populations. And luckily they moved paperless/all electronic documents, so not a problem with paper, at least as long as they don’t care if historic documents go missing.
Thanks.

Love the end… the sighting of the antenna’s… good one. A hive mentality indeed in today’s workplace.

The hive mentality is alive and well. So far I haven’t seen any antennas, but I know they must be there ;)

They slide down into the skull, I think… like “My Favorite Martian” LOL!

I’m sure that’s why I’ve never noticed them in the past ;) “My Favorite Martian”? There’s digging up ancient history…

Dear Trent,
Now that was just plain creepy. Reminded me of a 70’s sci fi movie SSSSSS where people turned into snakes. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Thanks. Actually, I think a lot of businesses have already been taken over by the Hive ;) As to Ssss, I don’t remember that one and just Googled it. I’m surprised it never became a cult classic.

Uh oh. Time to fashion a fake antenna and move with fake purpose right out the door before anyone notices he’s not “of the collective”.

He does need to move quick. I’ve known a few people who have moved to HQ and it doesn’t take long for them to get assimilated…

Thanks, Dale. When I get one of those nests on my house, I always wonder if they are going to try to assimilate us…

Oh no!! Nasty critters those hornets…

They are. I think the like Boxer (the dog) – if we have 2 dogs, they always sting the Boxer.

When Fiyero was about a year old there was a nest right next to the door and they got him every time he went in – after I killed the nest it still took him a week to not be afraid to go into the house!

A very creative take on the photo. I didn’t notice the nest. I’m not always good about the small details. The story has an intriguing alien feel to it. I enjoyed it very much! =)

Thanks :) It is funny how we all see different details. Last year I had a nest like this on my house, so perhaps I am sensitive to it…

That’s a great take on the prompt, Trent! I’d wondered what that object dangling from the window was. I like the way your story satirises head offices. They’re all full of corporate types trying to make sure they’re ‘ahead of the curve’ when it comes to thinking approved thoughts – sorry, I mean working to ensure management’s goals and objectives are met…

Thanks. I’m about 95% sure it is a hornets nest, but I’m surprised they were able to build it on a window! “Headquarters” is always a different universe than the field. I think in some companies the people at the head office are so busy with their office politics that they aren’t even sure what their company does…

I was going to try to work the word”assimilation” in, but couldn’t do it in 100 words or less. yes, a story about witnessing a murder would work here. Nosy neighbors….
