Hive Mentality

The place buzzed with activity.  Everyone was on a mission, working harder than I had ever seen.

What had changed in the six months that I had been at our field office in Dubuque?  Headquarters was known for being a bit laid back, lax even.  They kept an easy pace.

Now it was different.

And it wasn’t that they were working harder, everything was coordinated. The employees seemed to be dancing as they moved around the building, acting as a single organism. Hive mentality at its best.

I first noticed the antenna on Jeff.

And then I saw the nest.

So the first thing I saw was the hornets’ nest and the first thing I thought was that this building looks like a giant, stone annex to that nest, so the rest was filling in the blanks….

On the plus side, I’ve heard that the CEO has been relentlessly pushing Congress to study the current decline in bee populations. And luckily they moved paperless/all electronic documents, so not a problem with paper, at least as long as they don’t care if historic documents go missing.
      Thanks.

Thanks. Actually, I think a lot of businesses have already been taken over by the Hive ;) As to Ssss, I don’t remember that one and just Googled it. I’m surprised it never became a cult classic.

When Fiyero was about a year old there was a nest right next to the door and they got him every time he went in – after I killed the nest it still took him a week to not be afraid to go into the house!

That’s a great take on the prompt, Trent! I’d wondered what that object dangling from the window was. I like the way your story satirises head offices. They’re all full of corporate types trying to make sure they’re ‘ahead of the curve’ when it comes to thinking approved thoughts – sorry, I mean working to ensure management’s goals and objectives are met…

Thanks. I’m about 95% sure it is a hornets nest, but I’m surprised they were able to build it on a window! “Headquarters” is always a different universe than the field. I think in some companies the people at the head office are so busy with their office politics that they aren’t even sure what their company does…
