It was one of the Big Questions, perhaps the biggest. Brother Francis took it upon himself, walking the cloisters in deep meditation searching for the answer. At his funeral the joke was that he was so dedicated, the heart attack didn’t stop his pondering.
The plaque made me smile.
The ancient monastery breathed memories, it was like I was stepping back in time, or into a dream.
I entered the cloister. An old monk, dressed as they had for over a thousand years, walked, head bowed.
He stopped, pointed up, and said, “Eureka!” He vanished.
Francis finally found his answer!

What a timely visit – he could have another plaque engraved to commemorate the big moment. I enjoyed this – love the ending.

I think it’s best to let people still believe the monetary is haunted – since we didn’t get the answer, no sense spoiling the mystery ;) Thanks.

I’m glad he finally found his answer. Very clever tale!

After all of those centuries.. Thanks :)

Perhaps that is the last we will see of pondering Francis.

I think so. He either found his answer or he discovered that the question can only be answered by “going to the other side”.

Love it, Trent!
Just because of the name, I was back in Tuscany at St. Francis of Assisi’s monastery.
It is not for us mere mortals to get the answer. ;-)
Excellent!

I thought about my monks namesake, but this guy just talked himself, not birds ;) No, if there are answers to be had, it won’t be the living who has them.
Thanks

That’s fun. Imagine being there at just that moment. Nobody would believe it.

Shame he didn’t stick around long enough to tell anyone what the answer was :-)

I know. Of course he’d probably say something cryptic, like “42”… On the other hand, maybe he just realized that if he “moved to the other side” he’d have his answer without any more deep meditation ;)

Nice ghostly encounter. You really did make him go poof!

Thanks. His job was done and he went to the other side with a bit of a “poof”…

Like that story. Glad he finally found his answer.

Thanks. Of course the answer might have been that he needs to “cross to the other side” to receive his answer, he was just to busy thinking about for all of those centuries to realize it ;)

Hah, a ghost pondering the answer? That’s a great idea.

Thanks. The poor monk was so wrapped up in the search that he didn’t even realize that he only had to “cross to the other side” to find any answers ;)

I really liked this one. Imagine, thinkingthinkingthinking for all those years!

Thanks. Sometimes the search is more important than the answer – it is possible he could have had the answer the moment he moved on. Of course, that might have been his epiphany – not the actual answer, but the moving on bit ;)

Dear Trent,
You leave me wondering about the answer. Very well done.

Unfortunately he didn’t stick around to share that answer. On the other hand, maybe it is like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the question is the important part ;) Kind of Zen, contemplating unanswerable questions.

Ok. You got me. What does the plaque say?

Yeah, I ran out of words… The plaque was Brother Francis’ story. So “I” read the story about the old monk on the plaque and then witnessed the Brother finding his answer.
