“One, two, three – what do I see?” My words were slurred. “Four, five, six – stucco instead of bricks.”
Home for Spring Break, I found myself in front of number 456.
I had never seen a person there nor a light on. Ever. Who took care of the flowers? I was about to find out.
I took another sip from the flask before daring the stairs.
I reached the top. The mystery of “Malibu Home in Minnesota” was about to be solved.
Inside seemed normal at first. Out of the windows I could see the suns set over the mountains.

OK, I get the hint. This is part 2 of my FF story, though I hope it can be read as a standalone as well…

A mysterious story on its own!

It is…. I have decided to try to continue, but slightly different – I rewrote the two FF as a single, more filled out chapter. We’ll have to see where it goes from there.

That sounds so fun. I love when inspiration hits!

I often get inspiration from FF and other prompts :)

The house seemed unusual for a state that sees long winter. Now that you moved up the stairs, how did you get inside the room to see the mountains?

That question will be answered in another story ;)

Yay good stuff, there better be a third part!!

Thanks. No third part yet, but I did rewrite the first two with a bit more depth – if you are interested, it is; https://trentsworldblog.wordpress.com/2019/06/07/out-of-place-chapter-1/

Just read it, it’s good like a portal or a magic house depending which type of fiction floats your boat, I’d read more if there was more

Thanks. Ideas are starting to come, so I will most likely keep going. Not sure yet if it will just be a longish short story, a novella or…

I finally found the second half– good story, and I enjoyed what you’ve done, but I sure would like to read the rest. And By the way, no mountains in Minnesota :)

“And By the way, no mountains in Minnesota” – That’s the point – no mountains and only one sun in the sky ;) I have started to look at it off line and may make a longer story out of these two parts.

I see! I hope you do make a longer story :)

A portal to another world? Or has he had one too many sips from his flask and is seeing double :-)

It’s possible he is seeing double, but then, he is also seeing mountains were mountains aren’t, so… Maybe he stumbled into someplace a little different.

Ohh… Intriguing. Did someone stumble into a portal to a different world? Dimension? Flask-aided double-vision?

Could be a flask-aided double vision, but then, there aren’t any mountains in northern Minnesota… Maybe someplace a little different.

It was interesting as a standalone but also as part two. It all begs for continuation! Well done…

Thanks. I am playing with some ideas of creating a longer story out of these two parts.

If not normal, is it haunted? :) — Suzanne

Perhaps haunted, but perhaps something more – I used the word “suns” twice, that is, plural, as there is more than one sun in the sky, so after going in, he is looking out into a different world. maybe ;)

I can’t understand how you can make these stories with so few words. It’s very cool. An art in itself.

Thanks :) It is a great exercise to distill the essence of story down to 100 words. I’ve expanded several, including turning one into a 17,000 word novel and another into a 12,000 word novella (both in the book “Embers”), but I’ve thought about doing a book with them still in their 100 word form. It would take 500 of them to fill a short 50,000 word book, so I might need to add some longer (250 word) stories in as well…

That would be cool to make a book out of 100 word stories!

FF SF! Very cunning revelation of the conundrum. But can your MC return to his primary world, I wonder?

I’m thinking that I’m going to have to change “FF” in FF SF from “Friday Fictioneers” to “Flash Fiction” and fill it in a bit more than I can in 100 word segments. It is possible that the “house” is standing gateway….

Dear Trent,
Well that’s one explanation…aliens. The suns set…like that.

Maybe aliens. Maybe something totally different ;)Of course I was an impressionable youth when I first saw Luke Skywalker watching the two suns set in the best of the Star Wars movies…

So not our planet even? Or has another sun arrived? More intrigue.
