A long time ago I decided that I want to retire on Cape Cod. As a first step in that direction, almost exactly six years ago I bought a 4-season cottage down there and have spent as much time as possible on “The Cape” since then. This winter I took the next step and bought a large “fixer upper” in a great neighborhood. Last week I took the next step…
I teleworked from the cottage on Thursday. This is something I had been doing for years. It works out great. When the workday was done, I unplugged the modem and drove it the three and a half miles to the new place and plugged it in. 15 minutes later it came up and I was home.
Home is where the Internet is ;)
I mowed the lawn after work on Friday _ it was knee high and more in places! After it was mowed, several neighbors stopped to say hello.
My little office is now set up. I eat and sleep there. And yes, there is a place to hang my hat. Now hopefully the cottage will sell before I go too deep in debt ;)
My smile this week is making the transition from the cottage to the house. (Note – the photos are not from this week but were taken over the last few months)
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)
A place to hang your hat. Cool.

I am sure y’all will enjoy the new house very much. It is very charming. Do the dogs like it?

Thanks. At first the dogs were very nervous in it. They are beginning to get used to it. I’m not sure if there are ghosts or something…

It’s such a grand old place. I too would be beaming from ear to ear!!
My smile this week is because of icebergs. I’ve always wanted to go to Newfoundland to see icebergs and I’m finally here and they are magnificent!!

The house does make me grin from ear to ear :) The funny thing is, from the time I walked in for the first visit, it felt like home, that I belonged there – something I have never gotten while house hunting, which this is the fourth time in my life I have house hunted!
Icebergs are cool (no pun intended ;) ). Sometime I want to make it up into the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland. I often visit northern Maine, but usually not north of that….

I hadn’t realized I had left. Oh I did miss one week of most of my prompts maybe that is what you are referring to. I usually don’t miss yours unless they are going into spam again. I remember it happened before.

Sorry, it was poor wording on my part. It was meant more as “Thank you for joining once again, as you do almost every week”, -not- as “Thanks for joining again after a long absence.” :)

Oh ok thanks for explaining. LOL!

Hi Trent,
Thanks so much for putting this post together. It was fascinating to see inside a home on the other side of the world and be able to check out the furniture etc, especially of a friend. Is there a story behind the table and sideboard? Did you take them with you or did they come with the house?
I’ve had much to smile about his week as we caught up with family and also had the chance to go pecan picking and I loved photographing the trees. We also stopped by a stand of gorgeous Autumn trees right before sunset when the light is at its golden best. Autumn leaves are a rarity where we live so these were like finding treasure, especially standing together in a row like that. Wow. I felt especially blessed.
I also went for an amazing walk along the beach and I kick myself because it’s just down the road and yet I don’t get there as much as I should. Of course, that’s partly due to my health but I should be able to crank myself up more often.
Hope you have a great week.
Best wishes,
Rowena

Hi Rowena. We picked up the table, chairs and hutch the week we closed on the house. They are almost as old as the house itself (maybe older!), so fit in well. This is an area that has had English settlers since the 1620s, so a lot of old houses, furniture, etc.
Glad you had plenty to smile about last week. There are some great places for walks within a five minute drive of my house in New Hampshire and I don’t make it out very often. I don’t have an excuse like health! So I understand not taking advantage of the beach.
Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful week coming up!

Thanks, Trent. I really loved the furniture and the house. Would love to live in such a historic area myself. I’d be right at home. I’m a reluctant visitor to the present most of the time. Take care & best wishes,
Rowena

Technically, well, maybe not (unless this was an adventure you had this week ;) ), but I did smile reading it, so I will allow it as a smile this week. Have a great week!

What a gorgeous old house! So excited for you as you make your transition!
No post to share but lots of smiles over the past week! One was on my youngest daughter’s first day of summer camp…one was when we saw how many of our chile seeds had germinated in the field…another was when I learned a local school wants to put in a teaching garden for the elementary school kids to learn how to grow their own food. Good moments for sure :-)

There is a lot of infrastructure work (read electrical, etc.) that needs to be done, but it is a great old house.
I think having a garden for elementary kids is great. Since you are smiling about your chiles germinating, I assume you are gardeners and your kids will grow up with it, but most kids don’t. It is something that should almost be mandatory to teach… Anyway, great smiles for the week – I hope you have many more for the week coming up :)

What I smiled about last week was one of the grands’ graduation of all homes schoolers. Wow, at least 200 kids from 5th and 8th grade – all from the Sacramento area. Something you won’t here about in the news! It shows that not everyone in California is …well you can guess what I mean. Here is mine!

Wow, that is a big cottage to renovate! Wishing you a lot of persistence and determination:)

The cottage is actually pretty small – I’m leaving the cottage for a real house :)
Graduation time is always a good time and a time for smiles, whatever they are graduating from, elementary, middle, high or higher education, it is always a good time of year. And I’m including conventional, unconventional, private, public and home schooled :)
I’ll be over in a few minutes to take a look.

Thanks! We lucked out that the week we closed we found a lady who was selling the ancient hutch and, table and chairs for next to nothing – they fit right in!

I’m working with a lot of children at the moment and in one school every group were happy, smiley, laughing out loud children and that really made me smile 😃.
Loving your new home what a fabulous place to called ‘home’.

Are you working with children as part of your Pop Up Opera? Kids can be great and worth a lot of smiles. It’s cool when you run into a good natured group like that.
Thanks, it is a great place to eventually call home. It is in a great location and very close to the water.

Your new home is absolutely lovely! Definitely something to smile about!! I’m excited for you. I love old places. Before moving to the US I leased part of an old mansion dating back to the 1700th. It had original fireplaces in every room, original flooring, and original windows. I absolutely loved it!

I do love old houses. My place in New Hampshire is another old, rambling house. Even though the “new” place needs a lot of updating, it has retained more of the old charm and is much nicer in details.
That’s the thing about Europe is that there ancient places that are still used today. I’m sure it was a great old house.

That is fabulous. Restoring things to its old beauty one step at a time is so rewarding. I love the details visible in your photos, I’m sure there’s so much more. Please continue sharing 😊

At some point I will do a further “photo-study” of the place. With the outside being green now, that will look better anyway.
I don’t have any “before and after”, but thinking “returning things to its old beauty” – the first thing I did moving in was restore the old soapstone sink. It isn’t perfect, but it does look great. It is awful for modern living, but I don’t care ;)
