I had quite a bit to smile about this week, but I decided to chose something a little funny. I don’t know, I was just in that type of mood ;)
Yesterday I was puttering around the house doing small odd jobs. The dogs were watching me very closely. I said, “In a few minutes I am going to t-a-k-e t-h-e d-o-g-s o-u-t-s-i-d-e.” I spelled the words very slowly so they wouldn’t be able to connect the sounds and make the words, but they jumped up and ran to the door. They started whining. Oh no, does that mean that the can spell now?
I played with the dogs in the back yard for a while and when they started to slow down I took them for a walk. Fiyero (the brindle boxer) brought his ball. At one point he dropped it and so I picked it up. As we were heading back, he started prancing and looking at me expectantly. I knew what he wanted.
“No, I will give it to you later.” He still glared. “Right after we cross that road there I will give it to you.”
Idina (the white dog with the black eye patch) was sniffing something, so Fiyero quit bugging me and joined Idina in the sniff-fest. Good. He’ll forget all about the ball.
And it seemed I was right. After sniffing he walked on as if he could care less about the ball.
Until we crossed the road I had pointed out.
As soon as we crossed it, he sat down and started staring at the ball. He wouldn’t budge until I gave it to him. I had promised. We had crossed the road. Time to put the money, or the ball, were my mouth was.
I held the ball out. He jumped up and took it from my hand, all happy.
So he trotted home, content with the ball in his mouth. Of course it meant that he had to play once we returned to the yard, but I was expecting that.
So that is my smile for the week, an intelligent dog that not only understands the implications of the words that I say, but seems to be able to spell as well ;)
(Edit – I just discovered that today (August 26) is National Dog Day!! Wow, double smile :) :) )
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

Daisy has always loved to take the trash out on trash day. I think its the rolling of the garbage can to get it to the road her biting then wheels as it goes. She taught Zoee to love this game. We can spell it, say it in a different tone, or not say a word and they know when it is trash day. Its all about the LOVE for chasing the trash can wheels. I am glad to know I am not the only one who has dogs that can spell lol.

Whoo-hoo, trash day! That is funny. I do have code words, but they figure them out eventually. Like “do the thing with the feet” for walk. Didn’t last long ;)

Our dogs only wear collars if we are leaving the house. Daisy freaks out when she sees the collar or hears the tags on the collar clang. Now she has Zoee doing it. They love going somewhere in the truck but they pant forever because they are so excited.

They are great. What would life without them be like? I’m not sure I want to know. (And Boxers/Boxer mixes are the best ;) )

Great post Trent, and yes I’m afraid our dogs do learn how to spell! Maggie will herd us to the door if we haven’t closed our laptops and putting on our shoes. We get this at specific times throughout the day. We’ve tried the spelling bit, but she still knows, even if we do things in a different order, she still knows.
Lovely dogs btw. how old?

It is so funny how they know. My work laptop beeps when I put on the screen lock, so the beep means a walk. There are other things, just like with Maggie. Too funny.
Thanks, I think my furry children are lovely :) They are between 5 and 6. The photos were taken when they were younger.

It’s so funny – I posted this before noon and didn’t find out that it was National Dog Day until after 8 PM. I guess it just felt like a doggy day ;)

The funniest thing we taught our dog was to get her tale She was always chasing her tail and so we taught her “get your tail” and she would run around in circles until she got it.

Dogs are funny. i’ve always had boxers, so the tails are little stubs that they cna;t really get. Idina has a whip-tail, but has never chased it.

We had Labradors and their tails were whipping around and they were always chasing them.

oh dogs are so smart and some are EXTRA smart and in tune.
I loved the story and just last night I found a photo of our best dog ever – Commodore Cody – and it was a photo I had forgotten about – as he aged – he would rest his paw on the foot of my crossed leg. He did it a lot in his last year and it was this “connection”
I did not know if he could spell – but after reading your post now I wonder – lol
and woof woof

Dogs are great and very smart. they do like to have a physical connection to their humans. Unfortunately Fieryo thinks that means sleeping with his head on my chest every night. If I sleep on my side, he wants to put his face on top of mine….
Are you sure it wasn’t Commander Cody? He did the song Hot Rod Lincoln ;) Cool that you just found the photo.

hahah on the commander Cody –
and the photo was ticked away with a stack of 4,000 digitals that I am not sure how much to winnow down.
no hurry – but they wait
–
and yikes – Fieryo is a close sleeper – :)

yes, he sleeps right on top of me. Did you know that yesterday was National Dog Day? I found out late in the evening. So funny, this post was just a coincidence.

I found out from someone’s post but glossed over it – kind of busy and it is so funny how sometimes I am “all into what day it is” and then other times truck through as if it is trivial – oh the moods we have – lol
and how cool that you shared this on dog day – yeah baby –
but you share about your doggies here and there and so the chances of you landing a post on dog day on accident were good – and fitting – woof

I usually don’t pay attention to National XYZ day, though perhaps I should so I can have an excuse to indulge in whatever XYZ happens to be that day ;) I do share about the dogs quite a bit, though not as much this last year or so as I did when they were younger. I guess with all of the years blogging it was just a matter of time when i did a post about them on National Dog Day.

and my hubs played this with his band at church about 13 years ago and he said it was a top song to ever do (it was when playing some rock songs was fun in church) and it was second to Cheap Trick’s “Want you to Want me” song (not sure of the formal name)
