I am going to continue with my trend of small things, and perhaps odd things, this week….
We had a lot of tomatoes this year. We also get a pretty good bounty from the Community Farm that we belong to (See here for a post about the CSA). The weather is getting cool, so I decided to make the year’s first chili using mostly fresh ingredients.
I chopped up a bunch of tomatoes and stewed them in a crock-pot while I soaked the beans. I added a clove of fresh garlic, a couple of onions peppers (Italian from our garden, chilies from the CSA), etc. After a day I put in the beans and started the spice routine. I added corn and celery and more veggies. A day later and it wasn’t there yet, but the next day it was perfection. Not my best chili ever, but better than most, and doubly good in that most of the ingredients were fresh picked before being tossed into the crock-pot – food the way it is meant to be ;)
That is my smile for the week, making fresh from the garden chili.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

The coffee share has been around for a long time and has passed through several hosts. It’s a lot of fun to see what everyone has been up to each week.

That is good to hear. I have a photo challenge I am thinking of passing on to another host. It is great that these injustices don’t get lost.

Hi Trent. I had a nice little smile to offer. A mutual friend offered up a photo prompt that both she and I expected a scary story from, but for me a feel-good story emerged instead and I just went with it. I was pleased with the result and I hope your readers enjoy it as well. At just over 900 words, it’s very short. Here’s the link:

What, a feel good story over a scary story just a few weeks before Halloween? ;) lol. I’ll come over and take a look. Thanks Gary.

Would love to have enough home grown tomatoes to make my own chilli. Would definitely make me smile. Never seem to get the timing right here in Scotland….just don’t have the sun. Determined to have a crack next spring though.

We have a very small garden, but had tons of tomatoes this year. We are still getting some. Every day one or two cherry tomatoes ripen and we pick them, but my guess is they will be at and end within a few days – not many green ones left to ripen.

Here is my weekly smile for this week! I just LOVE sharing smiles, such a fun way to start the week. It actually is great any time of the week. I was worried I would be too busy, as my work is just nuts lately. I hope you have a great week!

Glad you enjoy the weekly smile :) I think sometimes people forget about these types of things (guilty as charged….) after a day or two, so i don’t blame you for joining in on Monday.

The fresher the better, and nothing is fresher than picking it, walking inside, washing it and putting it in the crock pot all within 3 minutes ; Thanks

I hope you enjoyed your chili. Even if it is a bit of Indian Summer, it is a great food for fall.

I do enjoy some types of cooking, but I’m not into other things, like baking – I like tossing in a some ingredients and experimenting and have a hard time following a recipe. I also don’t know if I could make figures or anything out of my food, but, well, I can always find an excuse to work with chocolate ;)

We all have our own preferences with everything in life, Trent. I like baking and I am good at it because I am very exacting and scientific about it. I don’t cook at all unless it is a pastry style food like quiche or pie.

I used to use a sleeping bag to slow cook a meal. I would get the ingredients to a boil in the morning and then place them in the slow cooker for the evening meal. Today I use a pressure cooker.

I do have one of the new style pressure cookers that are popular, but haven’t used it yet. Besides, I think it’s nice to have the house smell like chili for half a week as it cooks ;)

Your chili sounds wonderful, Trent, and quite a tease. I live at too cold an elevation to grow tomatoes, but I’d love to! Store-bought just can’t compete. And great comfort food for autumn. Enjoy.

It’s funny, I was never a bean person until I started making them myself… Chili is a great comfort food for fall and winter, and using mostly homegrown and local grown ingredients makes it that much better.

Happy new week! That chili sounds delicious! My smile for this week is spending time with my dog Millie and watching her get flummoxed by ducks floating in her favourite pond. She was not impressed at all!

I think I’ve written too many smiles about my dogs, but they give me smiles every week :) I am sure birds that not only can fly but can swim would be a bit bothersome.
