This has been a pretty good week with a lot to smile about.  One thing that stands out, though, is the Penny Sale for our local Lions Club.

I did a Smile post a year ago about last year’s Penny Sale. You can go there and read more about how it works, but her is a quote from it:

What is a Penny Sale?  We solicit local businesses and get donations of items.  The items can be anything, including coupons, little nick-knacks, etc.  Individuals also donate stuff.  The club itself also buys a lot of stuff.  I think there must have been over a thousand items.  There is also food and several other raffles.

The “penny” part of the Penny Sale is that a person can buy a sheet of 50 “chits”, or tickets, for 50 cents, so a penny each.  They walk around and put tickets in the buckets representing the item they want.  Maybe they’ll place a few in, but if they really want it, they may toss a bunch in.  We then go through and do a random drawing for each item, one at a time.  Since a single chit, or ticket, wins the prize, that prize cost a penny.  Of course some people spend a lot of money on tickets, even $100 or more!

There are other parts of the fund raiser, such as special raffles, 50/50, food,etc., but the big draw is the Penny Sale.  A lot of people show up year after year.  It is a tradition.

This is a tradition for our Lions Club going back not only long before I moved to town, but long before I was born! (And I’m old ;) ) Strangely, though, we seem to be more efficient and were able to do the setup and tear down in record time. Pretty much I devoted from 12:30 PM until 9:30 PM to it. There were years I didn’t get home until after midnight!

It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun and the money all goes to help people in our local community, so a lot of smiles there.

That was my smile for the week, doing this year’s Penny Sale.

And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small.  Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile!  Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)

Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.

      It is a great fund raiser and the people in town all really enjoy it. We joke that it’s the event of the year, but for some people it isn’t that far off – it’s family friendly, they can make a cheap night of it and see people they don’t run into very often. I’ll stop by to see your smile in a few minutes :)

      It is a great community activity – a lot of people in town make it their big night out. Hundreds of people attend. As to us, it is by far our biggest fundraiser,and as I said, it all gets plowed back into the town without any overhead from us, so a good cause :)

    What a great smile!! And what a wonderful tradition for the community the Penny Sale. It was interesting to read about it and just love traditions like that, and you can’t be that old. (See how I slipped that in there! Lol 😀 I’m old too…)

    I’m hoping to get a smile together tomorrow. Super busy week! 😉

      It is a great fund raiser. A lot of people have a great time, so even though it is tiring for us working it, it’s still fun participating. I’ve heard how much you’ve been working lately – you can;t be that old either if you are keeping a schedule like that ;) No hurry with the smile, and if you don’t have time, there is always another week when you aren’t covering for other people at work. :)

      It is a good fundraiser and attracts hundreds of people, so it is also a nice night out for our little community. It’s our club’s primary fund raiser and we do quite well with it. As i write i do see that you have posted – I’ll check it out in a few minutes :)

          I’m sure cruising Europe would be. For a very different reason, Alaska as well. My parents have done both and I most likely will as well (they did East Europe a few years ago and France during the Normandy remembrance a year or so ago).
