Why’d Vince have to pull a gun? I didn’t want him dead, just what was mine.
I searched the obvious places in the cluttered cottage. I knew he wasn’t stupid, but what was I to do?
Only 30 carats, it was considered the most beautiful gem in the Universe, flawless and colorless, yet a flame never seen before.
They say Czar Nicholas carried it when he died.
I was about to leave the kitchen but stopped. The homemade peach jelly was the color of salsa.
The diamond was smuggled from Russia through Georgia.
It was in the jam.
Vince loved puns.

I hate to have to explain a joke, but ;) Here, Georgia is the country. The term “Georgia Peach” is a cliche. Vince was in a bit of jam, stealing from the boss, and that hot rock, well, needs something spicy so… Vince did love his puns ;)
I learned a pun, and have a good place to hide any stolen diamonds.

Gems in the (fake) jam, or perhaps hot rocks in the hot sauce ;)

A thirty carat diamond of Czar Nicholas may be worth killing. But an easier way would have been incapacitating Vince and run away with the stone. Now police will be after you, otherwise it would be Vince, whom you could have managed with some ease.

True, but he is a mob boss, so has experience dealing with these things

Oh.. I really needed that hint… but as long as someone gets it they will get the gem

I thought “Georgia Peach” might be an Americanism so figured the hint was needed. Luckily the mobster after the gem understood the pun…

Made me think: At what point does the value of a gem become more valuable than a human life?
Although, there are a few people that place no value on their existence, so maybe a gem is the answer.

Unfortunately a lot of people feel the gem is more valuable…

After my first read, I thought ‘what?’. Then I read your footnote and after a second read, I had a chuckle! Well done Trent.

I’ve always thought “Georgia peach” was an Americanism, referring to our state of Georgia, famous for its wonderful sweet peaches. Interesting combination of clues. Poor Vince.

It is an Americanism, which is part of the over complicated pun ;) I know “Georgia Peach” is about the fruit, but I usually hear it used to describe a pretentious rich person (usually female) from Georgia, “So that Georgia Peach said to me…”

I see. I’ve always connected it with a very pretty girl :) Interesting how perceptions can be so different.

I have heard the term so little in years – but you are right, I have heard it used about pretty girls as well.

I’ve not heard of “Georgia Peach” so I needed the explanation, I’m afraid :-)
I was going to say that Vince’s puns will prove his undoing, but it sounds like he’s already been undone…

I thought the term might be too local. The US state of Georgia is known for its peaches so they used to call people from Georgia “peaches”, particularly over-privileged (rich) white people. Yeah,Vince’s puns were his undoing – he was too clever for his own good…

Dear Trent,
It seems Vince’s puns did get him in something of jam. ;). Guess the joke was on him in the end Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle

If you you think you are clever when dealing with the mob, chances are you are being too clever for your own good ;) Thanks.

ha! Sneaky jem in jam!

You’d think the gem is in the jam, but if you read closely, it isn’t jelly in that jar: the hot rock is in some hot salsa ;)

ah!!! Fooled me twice! I won’t make a very good jem smuggler … ;)

Too funny!
I, on the other hand, totally suck at puns!!

Thanks! Not sure how well the puns worked (forgot to mention the “hot rocks” really being in salsa disguised as jam ;)

Thanks, Robbie. Yes, when you are punster and have mob troubles, you might go to these desperate measures ;)
