Its doors long closed and shuttered, the place of worship was a reminder of a bygone era.
D stood enchanted, staring at the ancient façade, a hint of nostalgia and regret on his face.
“Come on,” Y said. “We’ll be late. Why did you stop anyway?”
D just shook his head, took one last look at the temple and followed Y to the gleaming glass tower in front of them.
How different the city was in the days of old; the shifting demographics, the people changing like the seasons.
In some ways D wished that there were still humans around.

Thanks for reading my third letter from Spain.
Loved the sheer mystery and creepiness of your piece. Suitable, as I’m at present trying to understand ‘understanding’.. Like most, I find humanity so puzzling. Their stupidly and cruelty are legendary and yet I know so many truly wonderful, kind people. Long may the latter reign. Cheers.

I’m a weird person – when someone reblogs a post, I make sure I read the original before I “like” the reblog ;) I forget who posted it, but I did enjoy the piece.
Thanks. The 100 word Friday Fictioneer stories are always fun. I do them almost stream of conscious. There are so many kind and caring people out there, but it seems to take 10,000 of these people to counteract one truly cruel or vicious person. A struggle humanity has had since the beginning. Hopefully that good side does lead us into the future

I do so hope that this is just an excerpt for a larger work. Very good read, left me wanting to hear more. Dystopian, maybe? Have a great week.

No plans (yet) to make it longer, but I guess never say never ;) Yes, very dystopian. Thanks, I hope you have a great weekend :)

And, the times they are a changing. It’s best we begin to see that or be left behind. Cool stories full of a lot of unanswered questions. Nice one, Trent. 👍

Great ending – left me wondering who/what D is and what happened to humankind. It seems there is a void in D’s thoughts about humans.

I’m not sure who or what D is – a robot/AI? The outcome of genetic engineering? An alien? Or, my favorite, a hyper intelligent cat? As to what happened to humankind, read a newspaper and then look at who D is and there is your answer ;) And D might be nostalgic about the humans, but he read newspapers too, and so…

Maybe they should have kept some of us around for entertainment and amusement.

True, but if one of those humans escaped, just think of all of the mischief it could cause!

Cities are changing. It is called modernising. Humans are becoming like a robot.

Cities are changing, as they always have, and the humans have been replaced by robots or genetically modified people or by space aliens or by something “else”.

I wonder what Z and E make of what we left behind. Nice one Trent.

Z thinks he’s the end all so is glad we’re gone. E has heard too many horror stories (“eeeew, really?”) and so is afraid of humans and relieved we are gone. Thanks.

Nice twist, Trent. We humans did create some beautiful stuff, didn’t we?

Thanks, Dale. We did. We created some ugly things too, but I hope we are remembered by the beautiful things.

I should just stop reading the news – as they say, ignorance is bliss ;)

I have stopped watching and reading it. I’m way happier for it. Get my news from FB – if it’s something I want to learn more about, I go searching (coz, yanno, FB is not the best source…)

I do read the news, but can’t watch. Typically I read BBC so I don’t have to get too much American politics. And that way I know what our Brit friends are talking about when the bring up Brexit ;)

“in some ways” is a key phrase in your story. Good one. Glad to see the planet survives.

Yes it is – when thinking straight, it is a very good thing that those humans are now out of the picture ;)

Sorry to read that you often avoid creepy ;) Oh well, I guess you have to read it on occasion.

On occasion, to spice things up a little. Lol

That’s the wrong thing to wish for. Humans ruin everything.

I know, they do. But he only occasionally half misses those pesky humans, most of the time he’s glad they’re gone…

They? Are you telling us something, Trent?

Me? Not me, I’m just a disinterested bystander describing what I see. I’m not saying I’m one thing or another. I am not realyl.. oops. Darn, I made a mistake. I guess since “to err is human”, that means, uhm… lol

Funny how many people had that same thought… Remember, he said “in some ways”… just when he is being nostalgic and soft ;)

What kind of species will someday succeed mankind?

Hard to say, but since this is in the near future, one of three things: some type of AI; a product of genetic engineering; or a space alien. I didn’t specify and wasn’t really thinking of any of them, but it seems most thought AI. OK, I think it is a genetic engineered hyper-intelligent cat so the one misses human laps ;)

I think the sasquatch will have an easier time surviving than those silly humans, so possibly…

I doubt we will be missed that much by whoever/whatever follows us.

Maybe not much, but on a rare occasion, some may… Of course it is only in some ways that D misses humans, though he knows he is better off without them…

Humans often failed to regret the past, looking eagerly toward the future. How ironic that here is at least one AI who regrets the loss of humans. Nicely done.

That is one problem with humans, we do tend to not regret the past leading us to repeat it… Thanks.

Cracking twist at the end! An AI android feeling nostalgia for the extinct human race – I like it!

Thanks. Of course, since I never said who they were, it is possible D and Y might be hyper-intelligent cats and miss laps to sit in ;)
