I drove down to Cape Cod on the 26th and have been hanging out down here. I don’t know what it is,but it is so relaxing being here, particularly in the off season. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this relaxed.
I’ve taken quite a few walks in the woods and on the beach, visited both landings that are close, had breakfast out, played with the dogs, etc. In other words, I have been on the move. And yet, that is restful to me – sitting around isn’t.
The new year approaches and we’ll move into the twenty-twenties. Sounds like the future, no?
That is my smile for the week, spending the last week of 2019 on Cape Cod and relaxing.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)
Hi, I just discovered your blog and look forward to reading more posts. We spent Thanksgiving in Nantucket and loved walking on the beach in the cold. It was peaceful and invigorating at the same time. I missed the time frame to leave a link but will join in next week. This is a beautiful idea and I look forward to sharing what makes me smile. Thanks for hosting.

Thanks. it has been a few years since I’ve been to Nantucket, but most of my visits were off season – it is so peaceful there when there are few tourists around! I just posted this week’s smile. Look forward to having you join :)

Sounds like a wonderful place to relax this time of year. I haven’t been to the Cape since I was a teenager. :-) I hope your holiday was wonderful. Happy New Year. :-)

Happy New Year Trent! I loved reading your blog post and it transported me to long walks on the beach. Do you need to wear a heavy coat to keep walm? Best Wishes, Charlotte

Hi Charlotte! The beach is great in the winter! I always dress in layers in the winter (turtleneck with a heavy wool sweater is common) so when the temps are above freezing, I just use a lighter jacket. I do wear gloves all of the time when it is cold at all – my hands always freeze! And I trade my fedora for a ski hat when it is too windy or cold. Anyway, tmi ;D

My favourite time to visit the beach is in winter. So glad you are getting some refreshment time and peace and quiet. Happy New Year to you, Trent!

The beach is so quiet in the winter and this area, Cape Cod, literally has 1/10th the people during the winter as compared to the summer, maybe less. It is like stepping back to another era. Happy New Year!

Lovely SMILE! I too can’t believe it’s 2020 and it does seem space age, like how did we get here? 🤣 Crazy, glad we all have made it and cheers to a WONDERFUL New Year! 🥂🍾 “Clink”

Always loved the cape in the winter. Even when it was bitterly cold, the empty beaches were the ultimate in peace.

It is very peaceful and life moves at a different pace – I sometimes catch up to the car in front of me while I am driving the speed limit. And nobody is tailgating me. In Massachusetts! No hurry.

The only thing that made me laugh this week was Dave Barry’s “Year-End Review” in The Washington Post. It wasn’t hilarity. More like black humor — but it at least put some humor on what seems to be a continuing tragedy of a decade that I keep hoping will change and that somehow will give us a brighter future. I’m having a very hard time finding anything to smile about. And if one more person tells me about ‘all the good people still out there,’ I might scream. It’s like those hopes and prayers we send to shooting scenes, as if that’s going to somehow improve the situation. Oh well. We’re still alive and I think that’s good news.
Best line in Barry’s piece?
“It was a year so eventful that every time another asteroid whizzed past the Earth, barely avoiding a collision that would have destroyed human civilization, we were not 100 percent certain it was good news.”

I’ve seen a sweatshirt that was a take off of a campaign sweatshirt. On it was written, “Asteroid 2020”. I forget the subtitle in small writing, but it was something like “Isn’t it about time to just admit defeat?”
I haven’t read Dave Berry in ages. He always has a great take on things.
For some reason I missed your comment. I rely on WP’s notifications and on occasion they don’t notify me when there is a comment…

Getting away from time to time is great. I will return a few times this winter, but not really as a break since I’ll still have to work. Hope you are having a great week :)

I think being able to plan or not plan what you will or will not do is relaxing. I’m glad you got the chance to do that one more time this decade!

It does seem odd that being on the move is relaxing, but… Thanks. the photo wasn’t from my favorite beach, which I did visit on Friday, but it is pretty around here. I think I saw your smile earlier, but I’ll stop back by and check it out to be sure.

You are so right – where are the flying cars?
And in the 80s – it was 1999 that felt far away while 2020 felt surreal –
And now it is here .
Must admit I am glad to be around to see it arrive – 🙏☀️

lol, yes, the timeless Levi’s… Now I have to find excuses to wear them ;)

I know – same here. I splurged on jeans this year – after that awesome post – and between work slacks (how do you like that word – slacks – feel like I have not heard that in a. while) but between work slacks and casual pants to go to and from yoga – well jeans are not as needed as they were years ago.
so I try to wear them too…
and the good news is that black does go with a lot

“Slacks” does sound a little odd, but not as bad as “trousers” by any stretch! For years I did not where any jeans at all, now it is about all I wear excepting shorts in the summer.

Thanks, Penny. Yes, we all do need a break now and then, even if we don’t really physically go anywhere. In fact, “going somewhere” often causes stress…
