This was another week with a few little things that were good, but I think I will chose yesterday’s run. I try to run every other day and have been typically running about four and half miles (7.25 km). It is winter here in New Hampshire, and New Hampshire is not exactly a tropical paradise ;) In fact, it is a major destination for winter sports. In the winter, I usually where several layers and dress the same as I do for cross-country skiing.
This was an odd weekend… Both Saturday and Sunday it reached 65 F/18 C. To put that in perspective, the forecast shows that next week will stay below freezing the entire week. That is typical for NH….
Yesterday, on the 12th of January, in New Hampshire, I went running in shorts and a t-shirt. And I was plenty warm, even breaking a sweat as I ran.
My smile for this week is going for a run in the middle of winter dressed exactly how I dress when I run in the middle of summer.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

lol, You don’t burn as many calories when you do it virtually ;) Thanks – unless the roads are awful, I can usually get them in all year, but usually not in shorts and a t-shirt!

Putting layers on to go run would probably wear me out enough LOL. Which is probably another sign that I should start doing more

Did you ever see the movie “A Christmas Story”? You know when the brother, Randy, looks “like a tick ready to explode”? lol My layering isn’t that bad since I wear thin insulating material, but it sometimes feels like it on very cold days ;) You do seem pretty active, going out taking photos and keeping up with 3 kids.

Yes the warm wave definitely put a smile of my face too but I have to admit it’s scary to see the climate change so drastically.

We always have a warm shot in January which is called “The January Thaw”, but, yeah, you have to wonder if it was so much warmer than usual because of climate change…. Warm east coast, tornadoes in the South and those fires in Australia… Just not normal.

True. In light of everything together it didn’t seemed right. Sorry to be a debbie downer

We’ve been in the 70’s here as well and the garden is calling me! But, I know how fickle the weather can be, nice now and horrendous in March (our worst month of the bunch) so I will be satisfied with looking at flower photos and checking my garden for daffodils!

I grew up in Ohio and March was the beginning of Spring, but it is still winter here, so it is doubly bad – the weather is nasty while I am expecting it to be spring ;)
70s is just amazing for this time of year. The weather is being a bit of a tease, though….

We grew up in the Midwest…….snow, dirty snow, melting dirty snow, grey skies, drab and dreary. That’s how I remember it! But, all our children still live there! January and February is so nice here and then Wham we get a taste of winter, cold and rainy, day after day most of March and then by April its 90 and hot as blazes! Love it!

lol, sometimes it seemed like that – grey and dingy. On the other hand, I could not survive too many 90 degree days. My brain shuts down when it gets much above 80. We might have long and cold winters here in New England, but when it comes to summers, it is cooler here, and I love it ;)

Haha! Shorts and a t-shirt sounds like something is flipped upside down and backwards or winter exchanges for a summer day! 🤣 That’s definitely worth a smile! It’s so nice to hear about your outside excursions. I have to say your inspiring as how can I be lazy by saying it’s too cold outside to get my walks in each week in sunny Cali? when you get so much done outside in the winter there!! 😃

A taste of late spring, just to tease us ;) Thanks. besides the fact that I’d go completely bonkers if I didn’t make it outside every day, I have to run and walk to keep my blood pressure in check. Even a week without running starts the number raising…

This past weekend’s weather was divine! I had the windows opened and it felt like Spring was in our midst.
But, like you said… This week is going to be bitter cold once again. Darn it!

It was nice to have that little taste of Spring! Of course, it was a tease since winter is just settling in…

Here too, but not as much as I feared. We are having ice right now :( In a week we are supposed to have bitter cold….

Yes, a couple more days of fair weather then the temps drop and chance of storms. Oh, joy! LOL! 🤗🙄

That 65 degrees must feel like springtime. It would be enough to make me smile after freezing temperatures.

Of course today feels colder because of what we had over the weekend ;) (On the very plus side, the warm weather being over the weekend was perfect!)

That temperature spike is unusual for you, Trent. I wonder if it is linked to the polar vortex/global warming phenomena? A nice change for you, to be sure.

Every year we get a few warm days in January – the January Thaw – but this was a little more extreme than usual. It is possible it was climate change related. I know they say that the Jet Stream, which controls much of our weather this time of year, was become very inconsistent lately because of climate change, so….

Well, I suppose you can’t do anything about it other than enjoy the benefits.

The sun shone on Sunday and we did a circular walk by the sea, over the hill down to the river and across on the ferry into town for eats and bus home. What made me smile – so many people out enjoying exercise.

It does sound nice. Part of me wishes I was on Cape Cod this weekend to enjoy the warm weather on the coast, but it was beautiful in NH, so I won’t complain (I might be there this coming weekend for cold and snow ;) )
