Last week was a very strange week with some major ups and downs. Looking back, though, I do see one up that sticks out, a Meet the Candidates Night at our town hall.
For the last several years, perhaps 5, our Lions Club has sponsored a candidates night for local candidates. We started with all candidates that would be on the March ballet, but found it was too unyieldly, so we narrowed it down to just candidates for town offices.
Last year the person who organized it passed away. When it came time for it this year, I raised my hand. So a I wrote the letter to the candidates, someone else got the list, someone else called a local lawyer that we’ve been using as a moderator to see if he was available and, well, others were involved as well. On Tuesday we arrived early and set it up. After the candidates arrived and the moderator was ready, I said a few words of welcome and turned it over to the moderator.
In my opinion, voters need to know who they are voting for. Names on a sign and other “visibility” and name recognition are what 99% of local people rely on. And as a candidate, I would think you would want people to know what you stood for. I think by setting up a Meet the Candidates Night, we are doing a service to the community and helping the candidates have the type of exposure they need.
So that is my smile for the week, after a bit of preparation, our local Meet the Candidates Night went off without a hitch.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
And remember, the Smile can be anything, large or small. Nothing, nothing at all is too small for a Smile! Sometimes taking time to notice those small, every day smiles is more important than those once in a lifetime huge ones :)
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Try to use the hashtag #WeeklySmile when you use Twitter or other social media that uses hashtags. I searched Twitter and found that #weeklysmile had been used only a handful of times back in 2012 and 2013. It hasn’t been used since. So it’s ours! I also registered it on Twubs.
You can use the graphic at the top. It is the official graphic for the event.
Now go out there and find something to smile about! :)

This is such a good thing to get involved in Trent. So often these names are just that – names on a piece of paper.

It is good to provide such civic services. It brings the community together.
Here is my smile for this week – much like my smiles for the past weeks: https://frankhubeny.blog/2020/03/02/liquids/

Thanks. I really think having information is key in any democracy. And it does bring the community together.
I’ll be by to check out your smile in a few minutes.

This is a wonderful thing you do…I’d go to an event like that for sure. Everyone should. I’m glad you didn’t let it die along with the organizer. It was a very very good smile!

Thanks. As I said in another comment, the big problem is that the 25 or 30 people who showed up (I didn’t do a head count) are the same 25 or 30 people who show up to all of the town government events like this. I find it a little surprising and wonder why more people don’t take an active interest. I know that you like to get involved! Tracy did a great job organizing and such, but we all wanted to push ahead.

Trent, sounds like you all provided a great service to your community. I’m sure everyone left better informed. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if more people got their information straight from the source!

One thing – I live in New Hampshire, the state where people say things like “I didn’t meet (huge name candidate for president) so I don’t really have an opinion about him (or her)”. ;) You’d think it would carry to local politics as well…
