The dull patina of the ancient Underwood drew me in. I caressed a key, imagining the scent of Egyptian spice; cardamom and aniseed.
Thyme? A pun?
I sat.
No bottle of bourbon present, but a glass of red wine would work.
I smiled to myself.
This time out of time, this bit of social distancing, would be exactly what I needed. I would use the sequester to my advantage and create The Great American Novel!
Paper in, enticing me with its blankness, the words began to flow. I could feel it, my masterpiece:
“It was a dark and stormy night.”

Hats off to that great novelist, Snoopy ;)
(Note – I’ve been away from Friday Fictioneers for a few weeks. Actually, from blogging in general… Glad to be back.)

Love Snoopy! A fun misdirect, Trent. I, too, took the last couple of weeks off blogging. A bit rattled by the quarantine here and hoping to calm down and get into a better routine. Who knows, maybe I’ll write the great American novel (haha). =)

Thanks! Glad you are back from your little blog break – I hope you are feeling a little better about the “new world order”. And perhaps you will write the great American novel – just don’t start it like this one ;)

This poem’s topic just caught my eyes.. The Book Within Me. It’s amazingly written.

Thanks. More of a silly bit of micro-fiction than a poem, but glad you enjoyed.

Good grief! There was me thinking Hemingway and you thinking Snoopy! Lovely twist! You caught the Charlie Brown idiom perfectly – Charles Schulz would have been proud!

Yeah, I tossed that bottle of bourbon reference in there to head towards Hemingway, but when the words came out, good grief (a great quote!), it was Snoopy’s cliche ;) Thanks!

A very imaginative start… well, I guess it takes great imagination to think it was original ;)

Snoopy knew how to bang ’em out

Yes he did! Though I don’t know if he ever got much farther than that opening line…

I loved the last line, those seven words have often been correct, but tonight it is crisp and clear. Lovely

I love those 7 words, but same here, we had a beautiful evening.

I am using the extra time to do exactly this – well, get a novel finished, probably won’t be a masterpiece…!

I just finished a draft of my WIP and have it on hold, so not much writing, but I have been playing (with hands) a lot of music and doing some recording….

Dear Trent,
You know what they say, “There’s no thyme like the present.” I raise my goblet to you and say welcome back. You’ve been missed. Cheers to Snoopy. ;)
Shalom,
Rochelle

lol, I figured if we were talking ancient spice, we just had to mention Thyme. Thanks, Rochelle!

If I can get passed that opening line, maybe ;) Did Snoopy ever get passed it?

Ah yes, another masterpiece.
Most of us have produced a few of those.
Until we reread later.

Yes, we all have written a few of these – sometimes I think that is all I have written ;)

Doesn’t every author start with that famous line …it was a dark and stormy night. 😄

Thanks. I was trying to contrast the MC’s imagination with what he or she actually writes…
