Hi! Today is Memorial Day here in the US. This is a day for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died while serving in the armed forces, though typically we think of “the war dead”. The roots go back to the US Civil War in the 1860s.
OK, that has little to do with my smile, except that I do honor those who sacrificed so much. I think of those WW II soldiers who didn’t come back.
My smile is really about nothing. Really :) OK, it is about relaxing. I have spent a lot of time away from the computer just doing things. I have kayaked twice in the last week. We had an outdoor fire in the fire pit on Friday, the first one in almost two years. There have been walks and runs. But there has also been relaxing, including today.
I am on Cape Cod. Although I run by the beach, I am not spending any time there. Uhm, I am actively avoiding it!
But it is very pretty. Look at these flowers, which are all over around my house. They are Poets Narsisus aka Poets Daffodils, thought to be the original Narcissus, with big parts in a few myths.
So it has been nice.
That is my smile for this week, a bit of nothing, and loving it ;)
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

I am laying in supplies for baking. I succeeded at soft pretzels. Time to go fo the gold: fresh whole wheat bread. That will make everybody smile.

Home made soft pretzels sound good, but so does fresh whole wheat bread. I’m sure smiles all around.

Hello Trent, what beautiful flowers! And hope you’ve enjoyed relaxing – a bit of enjoyment it is!
My smile to share! One of my sisters is a special needs teacher in Botswana. They’ve all been busy with online tutoring. My sis has shied away from technology. When I invited family to Zoom over the years, she would get me to hook her in via WhatsApp on my phone. Now she’s had to take the plunge. Yesterday was her first real video teaching. She’d been shadowing other teachers for a week or so. She was invited to her colleague’s classroom. Prepared with her lesson, she joined, and tells us how she started. Only to find a few minutes in, video and audio connections dropping and unstable. She didn’t hear the teacher say to her just carry on, let’s see if it improves. Instead, she went off to make a coffee and have a biscuit or two, pottering around the kitchen. She only found out later when the teacher contacted her after the lesson, and had a laugh that she’d left the video and sound on, and her every move and sound was being watched by the children and recorded. My sis was horrified, but always sees the humour in everything … as she WhatsApp-ed us: “Thank goodness I didn’t poke my nose or scratch my bum …” !!! 😂😂😂 Happy week to you!

That’s pretty funny. I use a USB camera and only plug it in when I am using it, just in case ;)
My wife is a speech pathologist and has worked on line in the past. The day they announced the schools were going to be closed, she reached out to all of the families. Most of the kids missed one or two sessions at the most.
Have a great rest of your week :)

Morning Trent! My apologies that I didn’t see your response. I hope you’re all well and that the children your wife works with are enjoying their online sessions as much as possible. That’s a good tip about the camera. Fortunately, or unfortunately, mine are built in. One of my clients covers his built in camera and only uncovers it when needed! Enjoy your week and thanks for the Smiles.

I think after the Jeffrey Toobin thing everyone will be more conscious of the cameras in their computers! Not that I would ever do anything inappropriate at my computer, but I’m sure there are things that are embarrassing…

Why are you avoiding the beach Trent? Is it too crowded?
I love the flowers you have shown us. So beautiful.

Actually, I went running by the beach and is was far less crowded than I expected. Lately the parking area has been far more crowded than the beach, which doesn’t make sense, but even the parking lot was pretty empty. Thanks, I do enjoy the flowers :)

I LOVE your smile post! Relaxation is the best and love the flowers!! Here is my Smile post for this week. I just had a lot of thoughts ruminating in my mind, reflecting – and I decided I wanted to use this as my smile post as well. :D

Relaxation is so important and helps us relieve stress. Not that it has been super stressful. I will stop by to see your reflections and ruminations in a few minutes :)

I know I smiled… even chuckled once. Yet, I had to do some sewing and ponder that question.
We have a back slot. It’s not a full yard. However, we have privacy due to a wood high fence.
In the back slot, we planted Milkweed about 4 years ago. The main bush grew big last year, and has propagated baby bushes.
We planted them for the Monarch Butterflies.
We live on a migratory path. 20 years ago, when we moved here, there would be CLOUDS of Monarchs. About 5 years ago, I didn’t see even 1 butterfly. They need Milkweed to lay eggs.
Last year, I saw about 20 Monarchs around our slot.
I saw a Monarch today, in the slot, checking out baby Milkweeds.
That made me smile.

I’m sure it did make you smile. I hope the monarchs come back! Us humans have disrupted so many of the natural patterns, and butterfly migration is just one. I used to see a lot of monarchs when I lived up by Lake Erie in Ohio, but don’t really see many on the East Coast.

I hope you had a great Memorial Day, Trent. It sounds like another lovely week in Cape Cod. Are you avoiding the beaches because they are busy?

Thanks, Robbie. Actually, I ran by a popular beach today and there weren’t as many people there as I expected. I thought it would be hard to maintain social distance, but I’m sure it was easy. Of course, it was not a day to lay out and the water is still too cold to swim, so… Besides my run, I still didn’t go there.
Have a great week :)

I tend to prefer walking on the boardwalks along the beach rather than going on the sand to walk. Of course, at the moment the beaches here aren’t open here, but they will be in June.

It is funny, there is absolutely no one on the beaches, but the roadways and such around them are more packed (and have been all spring) than I have ever seen. Very odd – it is so much easier to social distance in a large sandy area… I do like walking the beach, but don’t really like to lay out – it’s a bit boring to me. And I like wild beaches where the birds outnumber the humans 1000 to 1….
