The Weekly Smile for the Eighth of June, 2020

weeklysmile2a

There is a lot going on this week, some smiles, some not so much.  Of course I am at work and just have a minute, so I will do a quick smile :)

I was on Cape Cod over the weekend and, as I always do, I was kayaking.  At one point a seal came up close and looked at me, but disappeared.  On my way back, it came up again, even closer and watched me for quite a while.  of course I didn’t have my camera….  After it went under, I paddled for slow and soft, watching for it.  Sure enough, a minute or two later, I heard a sound right behind me.  I turned, and there it was just a couple of feet off the back of my boat.  My guess is it would have watched me for a while, but when I turned I think I startled it.  It stayed up for just a second or two longer, then dipped under.  I paddled slow for a while, but didn’t see it again.

The seals are curious but easily frightened.  I have seen them up close, but rarely as close as this one.

My smile for this week was a close encounter with a seal.

What made you smile?

****

Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week.  Why don’t you share it?  I hope you can join in!

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).   Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile.  (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

Kayaking is great. I love cities, but am spoiled by being able to get outside in nature a lot. If you ever have a concert in Boston, book a couple of extra days and I will make sure you go kayaking.

What made me smile? I reached out to someone for help, knowing that they’re “mutual aid” (not charity) minded and consequently got to do something I otherwise couldn’t have done. That really, really affirmed for me what I’m taking away from the readings of Paul Farmer, about the importance of praxis … to keep it short, if befuddling. That’s led me to local places I can be a part of this blessed mutual aid, which makes me smile pretty darn wide. :)

Slightly befuddling, but I get the gist ;) “Mutual aid” is good idea, since most people don’t want to accept “charity”, and it feels good to do something useful in return. Glad you got help and also pushed yourself in the process :)

It is true that not having a camera increases the likelihood of something like this happening, but I am 100% certain that I would have turned on the camera when I first saw the seal, but would have turned it off one second before it surfaced again ;) Murphy’s law.

Camera, camera, camera say it three times before your next kayak. lol, no pressure. although if it was me even after saying it 3 times id still forget it. haha. What a great experience to have. My friends daughter literally ran on water to another surfer, when a dolphin popped up beside her, she thought it was a shark. Have a most excellent week.

lol, I do need to say that mantra… Truthfully, I often do bring my camera, but it restricts my freedom a little (a big SLR with a telephoto lens dangling from my neck as I paddle….) and I made a conscious choice not to bring it since it was overcast and foggy. I could imagine the skipped heart when a big, sort of shark shaped, animal popped up beside her! Too many attacks to discount. Thanks, have a great week.

Trent, that must have been fun company to have along on your paddle. There have been Manatee sightings down by our community docks this week. Nice to see the river clean enough for them to come so close. Still haven’t capture them with my camera, but will keep trying.

I do occasionally see seals when I am kayaking, but they usually are content to watch me from a distance. It was cool to be up close and personal with it… I’ll be by in a few minutes to check out your smile :)
