Whoa, hotrod, cool that engine! Yeah, I know it’s been a while and you’re feeling frisky, but we don’t want an accident here, do we? Live in the moment, and see the now, not the destination, OK? Good things come to those who wait, as they say. No reason to rush it. No hurry. Let’s just enjoy idling here for a moment as we wait for the light to change and ease into it when the time is right. No stress. Yeah, that’s it, we’ll find the rhythm and… Wait, what just happened? What? You popped the clutch and stalled?

Yeah, the leaves are turning red, so the green is delayed ;)
More seriously, there are a few intersections around here were people accelerate on yellow (very common) and people start moving as the other direction turns red, causing at least one fatal accident a year. “Delayed Green” helps, but the cars running the red lights figure it out and so trust their luck even more, and the accidents still happen…
I enjoyed your take. Good story. Accidents happen? Sometimes. :-)

I used to love a manual car, but it has been years since I’ve had one. I think I’d have a hard time going back… I’m sure it would be a pretty bumpy ride. Thanks :) Hope you are well this fine fourth and that you are staying safe :)

Oh yes, Trent. Masking when out – every two weeks for groceries – and staying home. It’s not too bad. There’s always much to do at home.
Have a super week. 😎

I had a friend who was very impatient. He’d keep inching forward until the nose of his car was halfway out in the intersection before the light turned green. It scared the crap out of me to ride with him.

I have had a few friends like that. Uhm, just let me out…

Your story reminded me of learning to drive in my then-fiance’s 1964 GTO–what an awesome car! Probably not the best one for a beginner, but I did learn to drive the stick, and I loved every minute of it. And he married me anyway :)

No, may not have been the best car to learn on… After the abuse I’m sure a beginner gave his GTO, it must have been true love ;)

Both ng worse than stalling at the.newly+turned green light!. Fun one, Trent.

Thanks, Dale. Yeah, stalling when the light turns green, or when the light is right for… well, never mind what might have been implied… is never fun ;)

I know I stalled at least once while learning, and the more of a hurry I was in, the more likely it was to happen.

I stalled during the driving test and failed the exam :)

Ouch. Never had one that bad.

That “delayed green” became literal, eh? :)

Yes, and the journey itself might be delayed quite a while after that ill-timed stall…

That was so funny I found myself reading it with my foot on the accelerator(pretend) then to stall, haha. Some people are a little clueless as to the weapon they are driving aren’t they.. Have a great weekend ahead.

lol. Glad you enjoyed driving while reading. Yeah, there are people who don’t think about the damage a ton of metal traveling at a good clip could do…

I think driving shaves 25% off of people’s intelligence. Unfortunately, a lot of people have little enough to spare already…

I must admit, Trent, that I feel quite out of practice with driving at the moment. I haven’t filled my car once in three months and when I do drive, it feels really strange.

I do have to go out on occasion, but I have a plug-in hybrid, so only have to fill the car when I do the drive to Cape Cod.

Fewer traffic lights, more roundabouts at junctions I say even though a lot of people the opposite side of the pond won’t know what I’m on about!

There was a short time when we started to replace lights with roundabouts, but it didn’t last long – I think lights on this side of the pond are here to stay.

I watch people run through red lights and especially stop signs without even pretending to slow down much less stop! Idiots! Ugh… ;-)))

Yeah, I see that too often. I think people’s mental capabilities drop by 25% the moment they sit behind a steering wheel, so if they aren’t the brightest bulbs to begin with… ;)

Dear Trent,
Glad you know what “Delayed Green” means. One of my favorite lines from the movie Star Man was “Red light stop, green light go, yellow light go–very fast.”
Nice stream of consciousness piece.

Or the amber light comes on quickly and brakes are slammed and result in belt whiplash.

Yes, I’ve seen that too often as well.
As to dirty minds, my dirty mind was hoping someone would take the story to an adult only place ;)
