Rob backed away from the gate when he saw the package lying in wait.
Nobody knew he was there, did they? Was his cover blown?
Rob moved to a different vantage point. The package crouched, waiting to pounce.
He had been out of the business for years, but knew what these packages meant. They’d find parts of him in three counties…
Well, he still had hardware from his “working days”! There’d be nothing left.
The reverberation from the explosion was dying out when his cell rang. He smiled.
“Hi Mom.”
“Hi Honey. Did you get the birthday present I sent?”

lol, not sure how he will ever break it to Mom….

He’s going to try to fix it so he doesn’t have to…

What, and off Mom? Some son ;)

No, no, no, something a little more sly and less violent. Well, not violent against any family members. A stray small town or two? Maybe….

lol, that’s better

This does a lot with 100 words. Leaves lots of questions. Intriguing stuff.

I liked the twist at the end ! Maybe a cake from mum not an unexploded bomb ?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks! Maybe cookies or brownies, which travel better than cake, but, yeah, not a bomb. Now he has to figure out how to sound gracious to his mom without her ever finding out that he blew up her present…

Whew! For a nanosecond there, I thought he’d exploded his mamma!

Nope, not Momma, just her present. Now let’s just hope that Mom doesn’t explode over his destruction of such a well thought out gift ;)

A slightly dysfunctional family, it seems …

A very dysfunctional family… On the other hand, Mom would never send a bomb (don’t ask about Dad…), he just blew up the package with his “hardware” because he didn’t trust the unannounced package. Now he has some ‘splaining to do to Mom about what happened to her birthday present…

Ah, yeah, well … but … he didn’t REALLY know what was in that package, now, did ya? And maybe his mama’s birthday prezzie was not THAT package at all? ;)

True. And I actually don’t know, she might have been sending him poisoned cookies or something….

Good stuff, mentioning the three counties gets a special gold star too. Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire

lol, I may have to give up my gold star – I typically use “three counties” as a generic term for “a large area”, though I’m sure the phrase I use originated with “the Three Counties” in the UK.

There seems to be a bit of ironic karma here. Good story. I enjoyed it.

Yes, a lot of ironic karma ;) Thanks.

Ouch. Guess he wasted some ‘hardware’ on a not-so-sinister parcel after all.

Yes, wasted the “hardware” and will perhaps catch the wrath of Mom…

Wouldn’t want to be there for that

I see yet another lie being told to Mom for this one. I imagine when one has left “the business”, one never feels completely safe.

You may leave “the business”, but you can never escape it… Yeah, he will have to think fast on his feet to figure out a way to get out of this one. If you think The Boss is awful to be around when angry, you’ve never seen Mom! ;)

I think this is true.
Moms are a lot tougher!

Yes, they can be much tougher!

That they can!

That’ll take some explaining especially if mom knows nothing about his ‘working days’!
Here’s mine!

My guess is Mom does not know about his working days, so he’ll have tread even more carefully than when he was working – nothing is as bad as the wrath of Mom ;)

Nice setting of tension then bang. Mom will forgive him.

Thanks. I don’t know if Mom knew about his past vocation, so, unless he is willing to tell her, he has to think fast on his feet…

Nope, Rob will be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life…

Very funny. He’ll need to cleverly get out of his mum what it was, and then buy it for himself! And clearly, Mum knew he was there!

I’m sure she knew it was there – delivery people often send photos when the deliver a package, so… yeah, he has to do something clever to get out of this one…

Oops! Sometimes too much knowledge in one filed can have disadvantages. I wonder what he replied.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, if all of your knowledge is about “the business”, you are apt to get in trouble when real life intrudes. I’m not sure what he could say to his mom without alerting her to his past vocation…. Since delivery people often take photos, saying it didn’t arrive is no out….

Dear Trent,
It seems Rob’s left with some residual paranoia from his “working days.” ;) Oops. What’s he going to tell his mother? You made me laugh.
Shalom,
Rochelle

I’m not sure what he can say to his mom to get out of this one. He’ll have to proceed with an overabundance of caution… ;) Thanks.

Well it certainly made me laugh! (Don ‘t think his Mom would have found it so amusing…) x

Thanks! I’m sure his mom would not have found it amusing, which is why he is trying to fabricate some delicate lie about what happened ;)

He’s going to have a very tough time explaining it away – If he said it never arrived, she will show a photo of it at the gate, if he then says a neighbor must have stolen it, she will remind him that the nearest neighbor is 20 miles away…
