The Weekly Smile for the 20th of July (Moon Day), 2020 #weeklysmile

weeklysmile2a

Happy Moon Day!  (OK, so the first man on the moon was July 20 – I want it to be a international holiday ;) )  Anyway, I have two smiles for you today.  the first is small.  Very small…

The other day I heard a commotion in the tree outside of my office window (home office on Cape Cod).  I looked and saw two birds fighting what I at first thought was a bug.  Looking closer, I saw that it was a hummingbird!  After the two birds left, the “hummer” landed and rested for a while.  I turned my attention back inside.

The next day I heard a commotion.  I looked out and saw the “hummer” attacking a juvenile robin.  The robin left post-haste.  The hummer hovered for a moment, then went under a branch.

Do you see it?  I’ll circle it in red.

Now do you see it?  It is a tiny hummingbird nest!  Most of the times I looked out, the “hummer” was there, though occasionally it was empty.  When I took this photo, I think two babies were sticking there heads up!  I didn’t have my good camera, so used my phone, which is completely awful for this task.  The camera is totally worthless for anything except panoramas.  OK, here is a good phone photo:

And another, from two days later:

Second smile is that I was on Cape Cod over the weekend.  It was a very nice time!  On Sunday I did my longest kayak paddle so far this year.  There were long walks on the beach, hikes, swimming, etc., etc.

So those were my two smiles – discovering a hummingbird nest right outside my window and having a nice weekend on Cape Cod, including a great paddle.

What made you smile?

****

Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week.  Why don’t you share it?  I hope you can join in!

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).   Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile.  (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

They maybe small, but don’t mess with those mothers! lol, I had heard they can be aggressive, but I always heard it in context with other hummingbirds. I’ll be by to check out your smile in a few minutes.

I’ve read that hummingbirds could be aggressive and territorial, but I’ve never seen it myself and found it hard to believe since they’re so small – but apparently mighty! Finally, proof!

I had heard about one hummingbird dominating a feeder and driving all of the others away for hours at a time, but this is the first time I saw one chasing away bigger birds! I guess it just goes to show that you don’t mess with a nesting mother, no matter how small!

The hummingbird is great. I’m back in NH, and we have a lot of hummingbirds (I don’t know where the nests are…), but the are scarce whenever I get the camera out ;)

I had a couple of smiles this week, one I have a new Chrome setup and smiling as I learn its features. Setting in Kathy’s car. I saw a raven and red-tailed hawk inaction and a ferruginous fly over my apartment, this was the second time I have him. The white was the indemnify element.

I don’t think I’ve seen a ferruginous. I have been out west a few times, but I don’t remember them. I see crows interacting (bothering ;0 ) redtail hawks a lot, but I don’t think I’ve seen a raven interact with them – the crows are so much smaller, but a raven is almost the hawks size… Glad you had a few good smiles :)

I know, I just see them around and never connect them a nest either –
and this one was a little nest protective –
today, I had a bird really close watching me as I watered some wilting plants out back – it was so close and I knew it was waiting to lap up some droplets when I left – must be thirsty in this heat!! so I brought out a make shift bird bath for that area too.
oh and here is my weekly smile link today:

I have heard of hummingbirds getting aggressive around feeders, but typically just to other hummingbirds!

Very nice of you to make the make-shift birdbath. I hope at least one bird got good use of it,

Thanks! Both are sunsets – I was bale to get good sunrise and sunset photos at my old place on Cape Cod, but here I am on the East side of the river, so can only get good sunsets without getting in a car.
