I stared at the highchair mixed in with the rubbish. It was as clean and as solid as it was the day it was made some 40 years ago. Was that trendy company even still around?
Shaking my head, I walked on. It had been a long time, and I was surprised at the emotions it brought back.
At the time some had laughed off the flu-like symptoms, ignoring the high death toll. But the long-term effects were harder to ignore.
As “The Children-of-the-Plague” reached maturity, the full scale became apparent.
It would just be one lost generation, right?
Wrong…

Oh, Trent. I felt so anxious about this sort of event back in March.

I have read that there are more long term effects than most people realize, but I doubt this bad… On the other hand, I did not call them “Covid Kids”, so this might be about the next virus to hit ;)

Yes, survival one small step but a precarious leap for mankind.

Sometimes we seem to be looking the exact opposite way from survival of the species….

I’m sure they would have. Wasn’t there a Police song “Walking in Your Footsteps”?

It’s sad to imagine an infant or toddler taken by this horrid virus.
Let’s hope we don;t lose hope from it and can become better people because of it.
Good story, Trent. Have a great day … Be Safe

It is a horrid thought. One of the things I was trying to imply is that the kids who get it (or the un-named virus of the story – I never said “Covid”…) end up being sterile. Thanks, Isadora :) You too – have a great day and stay safe.

There are so many, many mysteries about this illlness that it’s hard to rise above it. I wash all clothes, cloth masks and cotton gloves the minute I get home. It’s like we’re all poison. Horrid is a great word to describe it all, Trent. Enjoy your day …

We are in difficult times. I don’t take that many precautions, but I do try to be careful – we just don’t know yet. I doubt it will be as bad as the story, but, then again, I never mentioned the name of the virus in my story, so it could be the next one ;) Have a great day :)

I’m in the super high risk zone. My immune system is very bad. It’s the reason I am minimally venturing out. I’ve never liked touching shopppig carts or doors of establishments. I’ve worn gloves since before this virus. Hope is all we can have right now. Be healthy and happy …

I’m in a low risk area and do little where people are beyond weekly groceries, so wearing a mask, washing my hands, etc., is fine. And I have a pretty good immunity (I have been sick for less than 15 days in over 55 years…), but I know that means nothing with this virus. Anyway, take care and stay healthy :)

Yeah, I’ve been trying to think of what to say to the sad story. Very well written, but obviously from experience.

The so called ‘long-Covid’ may be longer than we think. Good take on the prompt.

I know they are talking about some pretty awful long term effects for some people, but hopefully not this bad. Thanks.

Nobody knows at this point what the long-term effects will be on the young people. If Mother Nature has turned against us, which it feels like — and with good reason! — there is nothing off the table. Good story, Trent.

That sent a shiver through me. The thought of a virus that can affect future generations is very scary. Still, the rest of the biosphere might be quite pleased if humans became extinct…

This opens up all sorts of apocalyptic scenarios. I’m figuring this generation though is one which will be more prepared, rather than lost.

Good story, but not to fret. According to our Fearless Leader, “children can’t get the virus.” And “the virus will be going away soon” anyway. Surely, our President would never lie to us, right?

Thanks. i know, the virus is just a hoax to win the election, so no need to worry,. Oh, and as the temperatures go up in the summer, it will magically go away. I mean, we still have a week of summer, so I guess there is still that possibility…. On the other hand, I didn’t call them “The Covid-Kids”, so I left the possibility open for a different virus sometime in the future…

Dear Trent,
May this NOT be our future. Well done in any event. A good reminder that none of us are invincible.

I hope it isn’t our future! Of course, I made sure to not call them “The Kids of Covid” so this could be any virus outbreak, and not the present one ;)
