On the 30th of August I did a long paddle on my kayak. I went up Bass River from close to Rt. 28 to Follins Pond with a few small detours both coming and going. The best detour was into Dinahs Pond, which can be seen from the highway, Rt. 6. About half of the shots on this post were taken there. Including the osprey with the needlefish, the osprey hitting the water and the cormorants.

Yes, I saw a lot of osprey that day! I took about 300 photos of osprey on that one paddle! I’m not sure if these are the best, but I do like most of them.

Quick comment about the osprey and half of a fish. I took a few photos that didn’t come out so well, of an adult osprey feeding its youngster (the same one in the photo gallery) a half a fish that looked a lot like this one, though this was later in the day.

As always, you can click on a photo to make it larger.
Great photos!

WOW! Great photos. I’ve never captured a bird picture which included a fish. I could take cat pictures which includes a bird, but that seems sadder, somehow.

Thanks! I enjoy watching the osprey, and getting fish is part of it. And, yes, a bit sadder when a domestic animal has a wild animal than when one wild animal has another.

And yet, the domestic animal still have the same hunting instincts – cats particularly. We are quite happy when he gets snakes and gophers.

WOW! I can’t believe how they fly with those fish! Beautiful photos and thank you for sharing. You make me want to get out there in nature more! Like visit more remote areas so I can find the wildlife in action. Your kayaking is the best!! ❤️

Thanks! I do love being in nature, and watching the osprey is great. I have never seen one with a fish this long, but I think I have seen them with heavier fish – it is amazing how powerful they are to lift off out of the water with such huge fish!

Ah, Trent… excellent captures [I suppose for the ospreys too! ;-) ]

Thanks, Marina. Yes, it was a great capture by the osprey and (s)he seemed to be intent on showing it off, circling me for a couple of minutes before flying off.

Wow your photography skills are amazing. All of these pictures are amazing, but I especially like the osprey with droplets around it! :D

Thanks! I have never been lucky enough to capture the moment the osprey hits the water, but I think it is cool that several seconds later there are still this many water droplets in the air!

Wow, amazing photos of the osprey with fish, Trent. I would take more than 300 photos. What a sight and great photography.

Thanks, Miriam. I do love watching the osprey catch fish, and it is always a plus when I have my camera with me. Doubly luck is that the bird flew around the pond for a few minutes before taking off to find a quiet spot for its lunch so I was able to grab so many photos.

Thanks. It is very cool to see them and I always feel lucky when I can witness one catching a fish or doing something else cool like that. Sometimes I feel a little silly carrying around the big camera while paddling, but capturing moments like these make it worth it.

Trent, those last three Osprey with the needlefish shots are fantastic. I enjoyed them all.

Thanks! I’ve seen osprey with fish before, but seeing that was very cool. It took a bit of Google searching to figure out what it was…

Thanks. I always like seeing osprey catch fish. This was cool because the osprey flew around with the fish for a while so I was able to get a lot of shots in.l

I would love to have the opportunity to see that in nature!

Osprey have become almost common on some parts of Cape Cod, but I never get tired of watching them…
