Hey, all. It was an interesting week. A lot was going on and I had a lot to smile about. The weekend was seasonably cool, but sunny, so very nice. I spent a lot of time out doing things, from walks in the woods to the long, hilly version of my run. And there were other things.
I spent a good chunk of last week playing around with music. A few things – in late June I replaced my old music computer (Windows XP, over 12 years old!) and updated all of the other components, including the audio interface, which was well over 20 years old, and the software, which was last updated over a decade ago. Great, I was ready to do some recordings.
Only I didn’t.
So a few weeks back I picked up a new synthesizer. OK, I had to sit down and actually do a recording now!
So I did :)
It was fun since I was learning both a new instrument and an entirely new interface and way of recording. There were a few frustrating moments, but over all it was very positive. In fact, it was a joy to be able to record and not have my computer crash every few minutes, always at the worst possible time! Yeah, my old computer would crash randomly…. So there were many smiles. And I liked. I will place the video at the bottom of the post – I have put it up so many times now, I don’t want it here in the middle ;)
That was my smile for the week, recording with a totally new setup, from a new instrument, to new computer, peripherals and updated software.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

Dear Trent,
I can imagine how happy the sun would have made you.
And that’s a lovely composition. It must be so cathartic to make music. Just glad to know about all the smiled you experienced.
Keep smiling and stay safe.

It was nice to be able to get out and enjoy the world :) Thanks about the music. In some ways recording is almost like meditation – it is one of the few times the inner voice is quiet. I think I did see your smile, but will go back and check it out again – thanks for putting the link here :)

It is good to upgrade computers. Most of mine from a decade ago broke on their own forcing me to buy a new one. I have a friend who bought a new desktop recently. He was previously using a computer that was almost 20 years old, but he didn’t use it much. He was surprised how fast the new computer booted. His old one took a minute or more. I told him to save the old one as an antique.

My every day computers typically last about 5 years before they break. 90% of time it is motherboard issues, so nothing to do but upgrade. With the music computer, I have to have the most powerful beast available, so even my old one was faster and had more memory than at least half of computers sold today… So, yeah, they have to last me a dozen years or more! (I still have every computer I’ve ever owned since my first in the 1980s, so I have my own museum ;) ) I’ll be by in a few to check out your smile.

My laptop with Window XP protested and finally dropped. Your music sounds wonderful. Is it the keyboard you used for the recording?

XP was actually a very good OS, but it is still surprising how long computers with it were around! Thanks. Yes, the keyboard you see in the video was used for every sound, though I programmed all of the sounds from scratch. I sued the video for a review I posted here on Friday.

Windows XP, etc? :D We’re not Apple fans by rule, but Kevin’s really liked the Garage Band program that came with his work computer.

Yeah, it was an ancient computer, but super powerful when I bought it… I have heard of Garageband, but being a PC person, haven’t used it. There are quite a few pretty good audio programs out there, but the professional level programs just have so much to them – some music schools have degree programs where almost the entire thing is just learning to use one software suite! I’m staying with a program named Cubase since I already know it, and, since I had an old version, I didn’t have to pay full price ;) (The pro version, which I need, is a large chink of change if bought off the shelf)
