It has been a busy week, but then, they all are. This week I had a special project that I’ve been working on. There is a huge amount of background, that I’ll save for a later post, but the main idea is that I have been working on two static websites (as opposed to the blog).
I am working on two pages. The first is part of the “Trent’s World Universe”, and so a static version of the blog. It highlights creativity, mostly in music, drawing, painting, photography and writing. (This is my trentsworld.com site.) The second is my static author’s page.
Back in the prehistoric age, I used to create web pages by hand, writing in the html markup myself. So now I am using a version of Word Press to do it. I chose WP because I am familiar with it from my blog. And it was free ;)
I started this after I decided to get my blog off of the free WordPress and get a new domain name. I talked about it last week when I started, and I will go into more depth later this week when things are a little more complete.
So far I really like how it is all coming together. After sitting on these sites for years, it feels good to dust them off and put them to use.
That is my smile for the week, working on a couple of web sites.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Lovely blog you have heere

You’ve done it! That is a lot of work put in …. looking forward to your launch!
I am so amazed that you have build websites from scratch – we were just talking about how challenging this is over one of our dinners this week.

Thanks. Back when people first started to hear of “The Internet”, I wanted in on it and started building web pages. Back then by hand was the only way possible.

Maybe not quite pioneers, but pretty close – I set up a web server at work in ’96.

I have done hand typing web pages several times in the past. The newer ways are so much easier. Good Luck Trent I am sure it will be great.

I resisted moving to a WYSIWYG editor for ages, preferring the control that doing it by hand gives you, but there came a time when my sites looked like the 90s and everyone else had moved on… WP is easier. Thanks, Sonya.

Just found this in spam. I’ll stop by in a few minutes. Since this was in spam, it didn’t make the round up, but I’ll add it to next week’s :)

Thanks, Corina! It is something I should have done ages ago, so it’s good to finally get to it.

Your new static website looks lovely, Trent. It’s lots of work to get these things set up nicely.

Thanks. It is a lot of work, but it was really needed! I should have done all of this three years ago!

It’s a good and important project to work on, as you’re a published author and also have followers on your blog. Have a great week!

These are things I should have worked on a long time ago! One thing, I did not realize how intrusive the ads were until recently. Getting all of the eggs in a row (without ads!) gives a bit more of a professional feel. You too, have a great week!

Great smile and I wish I knew as much as you with computers. But I’m glad things are a bit easier these days. Good stuff to work on, for sure! 🙂

The ability to create a modern web page by hand I think went away in the early 2000s… Yes, a lot easier today! Now just layout and visual design.

Yes, using WP does make it much easier.. usually! I made a quick change to the site this morning and everything went bonkers! Thanks! I might have made a few changes since you were there (I got rid of the sidebar a minute ago), but I think you missed the complete mess it was earlier!

Has happened to me too, so I’m familiar with the feeling. I’ll revisit, but I don’t recall seeing a sidebar. Patience, my friend!

The home page didn’t have the sidebar, but the others did. It was just a couple of items, and it looks much cleaner without them.

I just managed to re-visit and I do see the pages differ. I like it!

Thanks! I just this minute added a lot more drawings and such, mostly in the figure drawing section. Slowly getting it :)
