Hello! I hope you all had a great weekend. I know I did. It was sunny and relatively warm. OK, it got above freezing, if only by a degree or two, but the bright sun made it feel warm! The week wasn’t as cold or nasty as it was in some parts of the country, but the weekend weather sure was welcome!
Mostly because of the weather, but for a few other reasons, I have not been running in almost a month. Even in the cold weather I typically bundle up and run at least three times a week, so a month off, well, I could feel it. And then last week I was feeling a little down. I started to do my normal exercise routine on Monday, but my left arm hurt, so I didn’t do it. I didn’t do it Tuesday either. Or Wednesday, Thursday or Friday!
So I spent a lot of time outside over the weekend, more than I have in ages! Inside, I finally was able to do my full workout routine on Saturday, and it felt good. But better yet, on Sunday I went running! Oh, I could feel every hour of that month, but it was still nice. Back home, my legs were a little burnt, which surprised me since I do a lot of walking, did a bit of jogging with the dogs, exercise several times a week and had been trying to hit the row machine when I couldn’t run. let’s just say that nothing gives my cardiovascular system the same workout, and the row machine uses very different muscles.
Despite the little bit of burn, I feel much better after the run!
That is my smile for the week, two days spent outside in the sun and my first run in almost a month.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).
Running is a necessity…

I really empathise Trent – although the challenge of the cold, I can only imagine.
Am just “restarting” my running after a series of minor ills and injuries – again reminded of how much conditioning one loses just after a little time passes.
Hang in there – don’t be too impatient with yourself (that’s me talking to me, too!).

There were a few years where I pretty much stopped running all winter – it is super hard to get back into it after almost three months away! I hope your illnesses and injuries didn’t keep you away that long! And, of course, since you say you are restarting, I hope you are better :)
I did get out running three times this week – Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday (yesterday). Each time out felt better! Not back to where I was, but much better. We have a few rainy days ahead, but I hope I can keep the streak going :)
And so back at you – hang in there and don’t be too impatient with yourself. If you haven’t been well I am sure it is even harder to get going again than stopping for weather.

Hurray! Am glad you were able to get out this past week. Was the weather milder? just a little?
I didn’t actually have to stop running completely – the injuries were all fairly minor (pulled hamstring, busted toe, mysterious tummy upsets, etc etc); just enough to throw everything off.
But restarting was a good strategy as it got me away from fixating on why I wasn’t making my times on familiar routes. Deep breath, start again.
Thank you for listening, Trent, and for sharing your own struggles and journey. It is always a joy & comfort to chat with one who understands.

Your weekend sounds really good. I have a very special reason to smile this week. It is the ten year anniversary of my husband’s kidney transplant. I was the donor and we celebrate every year.

It’s amazing how much exercising outside can have such a positive effect on our physical and mental well-being

Exercise does have a huge effect on mind and body. I’m sure your limited mobility combined with lockdown is a little stressful, but hopefully you can get out and move soon.

Yep, I walk up the road and back. Strangely, I have met more of my neighbors (at a distance) in the last few months than I have in the last 16 years :) because we can’t hook up for coffee etc. We have become friends on FB. One lady is American and the other is German. We are all artists so we have a common interest

Glad you were able to spend time outside in the sun and run again. My family and friends in Texas are safe after a few days without electricity, heat or water, and I had a good blog link-up this past weekend. Here’s my smile:

Thanks.
I have family in Texas, and my cousin was posting on FB within a day, so it looks like everything is good there. It’s warmer there now, I just hope they can clean up all of the mess!

I’m glad you were able to get that run in. It must feel good to get back to it, mentally if not physically.

hi T!
right on with getting the workout in!
it is funny how days can add up and then it is a week !
and i also know that sometimes we do inner repairs on breaks and i sometimes live having strength after time off; yet with that said – a part of misses it and needs it for our cognitive function and wellness.
my smile for this week is actually a month long thing – lost if sleep !! and funny but back in february of 2018 i also had a month of getting caught up on sleep! the holidays wore me out and then january was busy and somehow when february came i was able to catch some extra z’s 😴

After a few days off I can tell, and when I’m not running, it catches up quicker – there is nothing else I do besides biking (on a real bike, stationary ones don;t work) that gives me even close to the same cardio work out. After about a week, my blood pressure starts rising. So getting that run in was great!
Yeah, I need to catch up on my sleep. Part of the problem is that 150 lb weighted blanket I told you about ;) Last night it was closer to 75 lbs, since Idina didn’t sleep with us, but she woke me up a few times barking. By the smell, I think a skunk was outside…
Hope you have a great week!

love this weighted blanket talk!
and good in the winter when the warmth is appreciated
do they sleep there in the summer? or is it too hot for them

Have you ever heard of the saying “three dog night” (not talking about the pop/rock band…)? lol, yep we have them for a 2-dog night, even when it is 100F in the room!

I know the band but first time with the phrase – :) and wow – two dog night in summer is not the same as pets in winter – haha

This sounds like a really good weekend, Trent. I spend half of it working again, but did manage to finish a short story yesterday so that was good.

It was a very good weekend. Sorry you had to work through most of yours, but cool that you were able to write a short story.
