The Weekly Smile for the 12th of April, 2021 #weeklysmile

I was on Cape Cod at the end of last week and had quite a few smiles. I’m going to talk about two of them.

I took a walk in the woods by a saltwater marsh on Thursday afternoon. The alewife (a type of herring) were beginning to run, and the osprey were well aware of it. I counted over a dozen up in the air at once! There were times I could hear an osprey hitting the water every couple of seconds – Splash! Splash! Splash! I had my camera and took hundreds of photos. Unfortunately, their big feeding area was around a bend in the river, so I couldn’t see very well.

I haven’t had time to go through the photos, but here is one:

The second smile is going out on my kayak. I did a paddle on both Friday and Saturday. I saw a lot of wildlife, including, of course, more osprey. Both days were very good paddles, and I went a little farther a field than I typically do my first day or two out. It was just so nice to be out on the water again, even if the water was cold!

So that is my smile for the week, watching the osprey fish and kayaking.

What made you smile?

****

Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week.  Why don’t you share it?  I hope you can join in!

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).   Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile.  (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

It must have been magnificent to watch the osprey – and so challenging to capture them in action!
I take it the weather behaved very well for you to have so much outdoor time! Wonderful!

It was great – I think I stood in one spot for over an hour, just watching. The entire weekend I was on Cape Cod was beautiful weather, so no complaints there.

I need to get out and about to photograph something different getting bored around here. I do not get to see many Ospreys but a few here and there as well as Kites. We have lots and lots of hawks. Love the pic.

I think several hawks winter here, but I really love the return of the osprey. I think I took more photos in the last week than the entire winter… I’ve been experimenting with different things this year, but I understand being bored of the same thing over and over.

Thanks, I do love to watch the wildlife, and kayaking is a great way to do it. Those sunscreen tubes are too complicated, so I don’t wear any.. lol. Actually, if I am going to be out on the kayak all day, I usually do use some in the most exposed areas, like my nose.

Thanks, I do love watching the osprey.

I think the last few weeks you have linked to the smile post and not the smile page, so I missed them. I’ll have to go take a look…

Sorry Trent, guess I still do things in blogspot – style, meaning not a separate post for every of the 12-14 challenges (I would go nuts), but make one post for the whole week, except for doors, and my own challenge, All Seasons.

No problem, you just mentioned your smile and I didn’t see a link come through – out of sight, out of mind and I don’t put you in the roundup.

It was amazing to watch the birds “fishing” – I think I could watch osprey all day. And the paddle was great :) The early spring flowers around here are beautiful this year – I’ll be by to check out your smile in a few minutes.

At the other place I had on Cape Cod I used to kayak almost all winter, but I am now on a tidal river with a very strong current so… yeas, being able to get out was great!

I love it when you can see nature in its glory. One of our favourite memories from Japan was sitting at the back of the camper-van watching 8 or so White Tail eagles fish for their suppers right in front of us.

Watching nature is amazing. I have seen bald eagles catch fish, which is very different than osprey. The osprey plunge in and slowly emerge, while the bald eagles seem to just skim the water and you might miss that it has a fish in its talons. I always feel luck to watch.

We see ospreys occasionally on our little lake. They are majestic birds! Yours looks young to me the way its head feathers are so fluffy–but that’s just a guess. Enjoy these glimpses into your adventures outdoors!

Osprey are very cool birds and I really enjoy watching them. This one might be young, but it is possible it was still shaking the water off – they puff up and shake as they fly to dry themselves. Not sure.
