Alexander, AKA “Super Scamp”

After we lost Josie last December we started thinking “kitten”. As it became more and more obvious that Albert most likely would not last the year (of course we had thought that other years), our search got more serious and we started to apply to shelters. Yes, you need to be approved to adopt. We had a reservation to see a couple of cats last Saturday.

And then we lost Albert on Friday.

So we went to the shelter, Darbster in Manchester, NH, on Saturday. We were supposed to look at a bonded pair of females. the were scared to death of us! After 10 minutes of sitting quietly near them, they were stills cared to death.

Hmm, I do not want to force these cats into a house with two largish dogs and another cat if they are already so traumatized by us just sitting near them.

So we started looking at other cats and kittens.

Two really wanted attention. I opened the door of the first. She allowed me to pat her, then ran off to explore. The other said “Not good with other cats” on his door, but I decided to look anyway.

This cat seemed starved for attention. When the other forced its way into his “kitty condo”, he just sniffed it. he did better with Patches than any of the other cats did!

So he, renamed Alexander, came home with us.

Alexander is about 8 months old. he is a sandy gold, very light colored. He is long and very thin. He has very soft, short hair. He is a bit slinky, but also athletic.

Alexander explored every corner of our largish house within a few hours. he has been getting to know the other animals, though there is still a little hissing and growling.

Alexander is the type that is always underfoot and I will admit that I accidentally stepped on him. He wants to sample whatever we are eating. He gets on everything and his nose goes into everything. He has popped into the shower with me, but quickly left, hiding between the shower curtains as the water came down.

And so he has a nickname, Super Scamp. It is the perfect description.

He is loving and ultra playful, so it is OK that he is a Super Scamp ;)

Anyway, it will be an interesting journey with this newest member of the household.

All images were taken just after he got home the first day. And, yes, there are cobwebs on his nose in some photos ;)

      Even as a kitten, I think super scamp would look at your squirrels and think “food chain”… And yeah, even if they are bigger than him. We have a parrot, and I am not letting him in the room unsupervised – he stares at her and you know the hunting instinct is kicking in – he doesn’t try to hide it.

    A cat that cleans has got to be a good thing lol. Sounds you like you have a bit of a rowdy kitty. Those kind can be good but will keep the dogs on their toes. Cute cat..

      We got him to dust all of those hard to reach places… I think of him as more active than rowdy. He is very quiet and gentle, but active and athletic. He does keep the dogs jumping!

    Oh wow! Congrats on the new kitty. I’m sure he’ll do just fine with the others. Shelters are over-cautious about pet recommendations.

    They swore I would return Shadow because he’s semi-feral and very skittish. Look at him now, traveling across America and listening to coyotes howling from the RV!

    Sorry for your loss of Albert. It must be such sadness to lose a cherished member of your household.

    Sounds like you’re going to have your hands full! I prefer my fur companions delightfully naughty and full of spunk (although there are days when I regret it 😁)! Love the nickname!

      Delightfully naught and full of spunk sure describes Alexander to the T! I’m sure we’ll have our hands full and the nickname fits him as well as your description.

    That’s hilarious super scamp, dust buster meets the flash. You must have felt so bad after stepping on him, If I do that with ours I usually end up chasing them around calling out to them i’m sorry are you ok ohh no. lol. I hope the conversations between Alexander & the rest of the family get kinder, I bet they will all be snuggling by next winter.

      He let out an awful cry when I stepped on him! I dropped to the floor and called him as he ran away, and he turned and came back to me and cuddled :) He is one of the most affectionate cats I have ever seen. But he is still a Super Scamp ;) Funny, I think he will warm up to the dogs before he does to Grace (the other cat), mostly because of Grace, not him.

      He was at home the second he walked through the door! More so than any animal we have ever brought in. He does live up to his nickname! Not to be confused with 70s rock band, Super Tramp ;)

    Adorable! It’s funny, Gatsby was super mellow at the shelter (he was 6 months then) and I thought that was fine. But it turned out he had a cold. When he got better, he became a ball of energy, which hasn’t stopped 10 years later! Wishing you many fun years with little Alexander!
