The Weekly Smile for the 7th of June, 2021 #weeklysmile

Hi! This was a weird week. I did a lot but there is little to talk about. OK, let’s back up for a moment or two.

I am not a hot weather person. I live in New Hampshire instead of Texas or South Carolina (I’ve lived both places) for a reason! I could not survive in a place where air conditioning was mandatory.

We started our second heatwave of the year on Saturday. Typically we will have 90+ F (33+ C) for extended periods perhaps twice a season, usually in late July or early August. Some years are worse. Being on our second one weeks before the official start of summer? That is odd! And for a person who prefers cool temperatures?

And yet I haven’t minded it….yet – ask me On Thursday how I feel! In fact, it has been nice.

I did a full mowing of the yard (I always do the front-front, but the other parts might be staggered, depending on growth and weather) for the first time this weekend. I did a few walks. I used the water hose a lot, for cleaning, watering plants, filling doggie water dishes and cooling down puppies. The walk after a storm rolled through Saturday evening was gorgeous – it is rare that the air has that color quality. There was walking in the relatively cool woods and some hikes up a hill, plus my favorite run, which has some of the best views in a 10 mile radius. I stayed outside as much as possible.

There are down sides – coordinating opening and closing windows to get cool air in the house at night while shutting out the hot air. The fan-noise drives me absolutely crazy – I avoid it when I can. Overall, though,it was good.

Why?

Because this was the first real taste of summer we’ve had. It felt so, so much like summer, and reminded me more of summer from my childhood than any other stretch of warm weather I can remember in the last few years. The long June days, the heat, but not super oppressive – I enjoyed being out and doing things. The taste of the air. It was all there.

So that is my smile, a nice early taste of summer.

What made you smile?

****

Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week.  Why don’t you share it?  I hope you can join in!

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).   Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile.  (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

Springtime is my favorite time of year the flowers are blooming the temperatures are in the 80’s and most days are just beautiful. Summertime can get hot and muggy in Texas. My choice of overall temperature would be 72-75 degrees. We use tower fans and they are pretty quiet and put out a lot of air. Enjoy your summer and your cooler temperatures Trent.

I agree, 72 – 75 is perfect. It is warm, but comfortable when you need to do something strenuous. Our heatwave broke last night, so today should be about perfect. The house cooled down almost 15 degrees over night!
I spent a summer in Dallas and a summer in OKC, and there are reasons I live in NH ;)
Hope you are having a great week

I love how you’re getting a taste of summer but in a good way and I hope it doesn’t get too hot to soon there for you. Loved your smile post as I’m loving our weather here on the west coast too!! It’s so nice to get out and be outside when ever possible! ❤️😀

It’s so interesting to have you describe climate which is so different from what I experience; essentially, it is summer everyday in Singapore: just more/less heat, more/less humidity, more/less rain with each day.

Having said this, my little family prefers cooler weather – one of the reasons we loved spending Christmas & the winter season with our London family, something which we haven’t been able to do for a while. That was our escape to more comfortable weather!

I hear you, though – the memories attached to summer are special. So I am glad you got enjoyed the reminiscing this week.

I would have trouble living in a place that is constantly hot! I did live in the southern US off and on for two years, but even that is not quite the same since there is some winter. Where I live we have the extremes – very cold winters (-20 C is common and -25 not unusual) with the possibilities of huge snow storms, and though our summers are milder, we can have stretches of hot weather (we have a few extended periods of over 35 C every year, but 40 is unusual).
I’m sure an escape to London would be a welcome relief, though maybe dark at Christmas! Those late December days are short…
It is odd what brings back childhood memories, and being out in a summer evening sometimes does it for me…

Loving Husband firmly believes that having distinct seasons prepares us better to accept change – maybe that’s why I struggle so much with changes, having lived in the tropics for most of my life. 😉

We actually love the early darkening of London winter days – incentive to go home for teatime and a pint.

It is interesting what evokes memories – thank you for sharing yours! For me, it is the smell of rain.

I love weather that invokes childhood! I also love the heat, but not humidity. It’s been so steamy in FL this past week that when I take my pup for his daily jaunt I’m in a full on sweat within 5 minutes – before 7am!

Today is like that – it is more humid than it has been (and it’s been humid) and it didn’t get much below 80 last night. Just walking outside and you are soaked.

So great you get out & enjoy your surroundings. I like you cannot stand the noise of fans or the aircon for long at all if at all. I can actually feel when we have a blackout before anyone else in the house has realized. My family thinks I’m odd, I own it. lol. It is the best feeling the cool air of the afternoon thunder storm. Stay chillaxed my friend & have a great rest of the week.

I don’t like air conditioning much, but it is sometimes a necessary evil… Some people are more sensitive to things than others, and you sound very sensitive. I do try to get out as much as possible, though today is oppressive – it is as hot as it has been but the humidity is even higher and there is no breeze. Oh well, I will still get out :)

My smile almost ripped my ears off, when I opened the package of art supplies from Tim!!!
If I can bank a smile… it was when you said drawing is more important than reading blogs.
You let. me know … I think/feel that it is okay to do my creatives when I want, and to visit my pals when I want. Blogging is not my job. It is my joy.
Many a blog post has brought a smile to my face!
    Happy summer, Trent!

Blogging is great – I do use it to release some of my creativity and interacting with people I want to interact with, and not just because they live near me or whatever, is great. But, yeah, it is a sideline, not the main attraction :) Hope your week is going well!

Thanks. i think a little of both – “despite”, since I would much rather have had it 10 degrees cooler, and “because” since it was a perfect “late summer” weekend, even if it is still early summer/late-spring.

    I’m with you on the heat ‘hating’ but I enjoy the calming sound of fans. I have acute hearing still (knock on wood) so that ambient noise drowns out the sounds that would disturb me. [ticking clocks…husband sighing in his sleep…son up late raiding the frig}
(I’m one of those people who sleeps with one on year ’round.)
Your walk after a storm sounds familiar and wonderful. At camp, it’s the perfect hunting for red efts experience. My granddaughter and I have a sixteen count for our current record. lol

I do hear everything all of the time, but unfortunately, white noise doesn’t help me, it makes it worse. Natural sounds are fine (OK, loud breathing to snoring is not!), but I have never been able to sleep with a watch or ticking clock. And I do wake up when the dogs roll over. or the pounding feet of the 5 pound kitting sneaking into the room ;) yes, even over the fan I heard the kitten enter the room last night…
The air was both crisp and clear, so the distant mountains seemed feet away, and yet there was mist over everything. the low sun made everything flame gold. It was magical, but I didn’t see any red efts…

A wonderful smile, indeed. We are in that heatwave, too. Also the second one. We are going to be hitting 90’s feel like 100’s tomorrow.
Yesterday, however, there was a breeze and while it was hot, it was fantastic in the shade. I stayed outside all day – even ran in the morning – oy. That was HOT…
    Have a great week, Trent!

I think the heat wave has been hitting most of the eastern half of the continent, but strangely enough my parents in northern Ohio (shore of Lake Erie) have been having great, much cooler weather! I think my run on Saturday morning will be the last one until either Friday afternoon or this coming Saturday! You too, have a great week! Stay cool.

I’m looking at the weather app and it’s a smoking 100 out there right now. Tomorrow morning, it will start at 75-78… eesh. Hopefully, I can manage to get myself up and at ’em early!

Yikes. It is about 95 here. I think the overnight will be about that, but then Tuesday into Wednesday it might not get below 80… yuck! I think next weekend will be nice…

Just checked and they chnaged it – it reached 92 at 10 am, bumped up to 93 by 11 and was supposed to go up to 95 or 96, but has stayed 92. it will stay 92 until 7 PM! And the low tonight will be 77, and then cool a little tomorrow night Tuesday into Wed will be 72, not 82, so good! I may be able to sleep ;) “feels like” is 97 tight now.

Yow, that’s awful. It is 72 at my house on Cape Cod at this very minute – if I didn’t have appointments every day this week I would have been there!
