lines drawn star to star
plastered up there in the sky
a map where birds fly
ancient navigator’s hand
leads my paper crane heart home

This was written for Colleen’s weekly poetry challenge. This week’s challenge was an ekphrastic using the picture at the top of the page. I chose to write a tanka.

well done (and paper cranes are really hard to make with origami)

In Buddhism, the crane is a sacred bird. Here’s the story: https://visitworldheritage.com/en/buddha/buddha-and-the-sarus-crane/f008726c-a6ff-4d5c-a06f-ec7d61ea4d47. I have a crane sculpture by my fireplace made out of metal. It’s a wonderful bird. <3

I have heard that the crane is revered in many parts of the world, and Asia more than most. Just looking up “paper crane” I found “The paper crane is a symbol of peace, love, and hope, and healing during challenging times”, which is close to the meaning I was thinking when I put in “paper crane heart” :)

I really like this one, Trent. I love how you got the paper crane in there in a metaphorical way.

Thanks. The paper crane was the first thing I noticed, even before I realized they were constellations, so I had to find a way to fit it in.

My dad loves origami — though he’s not too active with that hobby lately — so I especially appreciated that point. :)

Ah, so I’m sure you saw that bit of origami in the image right off as well. And I’m sure it is close to your heart.

I like the idea of mapping the stars with lines from your paper crane heart.
