Hi all! Happy Summer for those in the Northern Hemisphere, or Winter for those of you in the Southern. Yesterday was the big day, or at least the longest day up north. And I am having a bit of a summer vacation! I unexpectedly had Friday off and I am off today. I just got back from a long walk on my favorite beach. I’ve been swimming, hiking and kayaking. Yes, I am on Cape Cod.
My biggest smile was yesterday’s kayak paddle. It was my longest of the year up to this point and one of my longest in the last few years. I stayed at a constant fast rate, pulling in behind a motor boat and following it for the first four miles, passing it on occasion. OK, there is a speed limit on the river, and I paddle faster than that 6 mph posted limit.
I paddled in several very different environments, from small ponds to saltwater marshes to a small lake. Of course most of it was the tidal river, sometimes broad and smooth, sometimes narrow and swift.
I saw a lot of wildlife. Twice I had a seal come up and check me out. We just watched each other for a minute or two before the seals went under.
Overall it was a great paddle.
That is my smile for the week, a little early summer vacation and a great paddle on the kayak.
What made you smile?
****
Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week. Why don’t you share it? I hope you can join in!
Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas. If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity. Don’t smile about the misfortune of others. Don’t smile in a way to excludes others. Make sure a 12 year old can read it.
To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile. Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ). You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me). Next week I will compile all of the Smiles and do a separate post of them on Monday morning just before the smile. (I will shoot for around 7 AM EST).

There is a strict speed limit, but yes :) Last year a boat followed me for over a mile and said I was averaging 8 mph. Thanks! Not quite ready for the Olympics, but faster than the average kayaker.

You are full of adventure lol. Seals seem curious about people.

That’s me, always a new adventure… lol. Seals are pretty curious about what we are doing in their world, but they can also be very skittish.

Doing my first post on Wed. last week was for sure a reason to smile. Sorry, you were already alerted ‘something was up, but at the time I didn’t know what to do yet.Ended up deleting my blog. So my new url is http;//livingbetweentworealms.wordpress.com I am back, but my posts will be geared less to all the weekly memes. Great you had a fun time on the water, Jesh.

I hope the new blog goes well! I think it must be awful to have to delete an old blog, but I understand the starting over with a new idea.
Thanks, it was a great paddle and a good time out. Have a great week!

What a wonderful SMILE!! Yay, for getting in all the outdoors time and for the longest kayaking in awhile! How FUN and to go that fast must be a blast!! I think you’ll get this message, what weird little gremlins lurking about! Hehe, everyone who reads this is going to wonder what we are talking about… Just techy weird things happening sometimes!! I’ll be putting together a smile post in a day or two. (Takes me time to carve out an hour of my morning to write during the week!) Thanks for the smiles!!! 😎

What a awesome time, great you had a descent length of time out, is the water clear enough to see the fishes swimming? I used to love mooring in small coves & surfing has moments of clarity in the depths. Fun stuff.

It was great to get out. Where I kayaked over the weekend the water is pretty murky, but sometimes when the wind is calm it can be very clear. There are other places that are much clearer, but I don’t there often. occasionally I will get out and swim, though I didn’t this weekend.

I often carry my camera, though the big telephoto lens gets heavy on my neck! I did not have the camera with me this time… Last year i got a few good seal shots from the kayak and tons of great osprey photos!

I’ve had a few encounters with seals on my kayak before, and it is always great. These two were very nice as they were closer then usual and spent more time watching me.
