lazy river flows
the sights a million times seen
ever new water
I turn the bend once again
watchful for something different

This was written for Colleen’s weekly poetry challenge. This week was to write poem on a theme, Discovery. I chose to write a tanka.

How exciting to make new discoveries. I always think it’s great to travel a well-known path and to find something totally different that you didn’t see before. You captured that feeling in your tanka, Trent. Well done! <3

Thanks, Colleen. I don’t get too bored always treading the same path since it is never really the same twice…

Thanks. The photo is the river where I kayak, but usually I am out in the middle of the day ;)

Thanks! Yes, there always is something new, even in the same routine.

I’m sure there would always be new things to discover while kayaking/canoeing. Sometimes, just walking a familiar neighborhood route, I notice new things — different people out with different dogs, changes in people’s gardens, etc. Sometimes, it’s great to change your atmosphere altogether, but sometimes there are new things to discover even in a familiar setting.

I forget who it was, but some philosopher said that since the water in the river is always being renewed, it is never the same river twice. Sometimes it is nice to look at life like that – the walk through the neighborhood is always slightly different and there is always something new there to discover, even if it is the flower that was a bud last week is in bloom today :)
