Notice to all staff members,
It has come to our attention that several employees have been misusing our Corporation technology. As you know, it is against Corporation policy to use the chat feature of our communication program for anything except strict business uses. Business conversations may be initiated through the use of the word “Hello”, but beyond that, no other unnecessary words are to be used. Beginning immediately, we will dock your pay by $1 for every nonessential, non-business word used on Chat. All non-business conversations of more than three words will result in immediate dismissal from Corporation.

Notice to all staff members,
Keeping a professional appearance is very important to the success to Corporation. It has come to our attention that several employees have ignored our dress and grooming codes. As you are well aware, specific styles by specific brands are mandatory for all employees at all times. Several employees who, because of privacy laws will remain anonymous but are members of certain unnamed minorities, have been ignoring our standards by not wearing their hair in one of the three approved, professional styles. Please remediate immediately!

Notice to all staff members,
It has come to our attention that several members of the staff have used facilities reserved for Management. Unless there is an emergency, please only use the facilities in your own unit! This goes beyond lavatories and washrooms. It is important that employees in different fields not have to worry about unwanted distractions, so please continue to eat only at the tables marked for your department and paygrade. As always, those below paygrade 4 must eat in the garbage collection area.

Notice to all staff members,
We hope you enjoyed the mandatory video, Community! Our next Community and Diversity exercise will be a mandatory prayer meeting given by the minister of your CEO’s church which will teach you how knowing your place in society will make you a better citizen and thus create a better Community! See you then!

I heard a terrible rumour that “they” were thinking of giving women the vote!

Imagine, the nerve of them! I think the mentality of opposing such things still exists today in some corporate cultures…

Very Orwellian and true to life, Trent. The hairstyle one hit it on the head.

I am glad that a lot of companies are now more comfortable with “natural” hairstyles, just one of those odd discrimination things most white guys like me never have to think about until we know someone affected, read about it, or whatever.

True indeed , our eldest son had trouble at a previous job! He went to a “Breakfast meeting” one floor up in the lift…he took his coffee with him. He met the Boss of the firm in the lift who took exception to him carrying his coffee up to the meeting! A memo email was sent to all staff telling them coffee could not be taken in the lifts! He also got told “it was not done to talk to colleagues across the room except by email. ? He was in the habit of going across to help people… That was not smiled on?? …. H. R. ??

A lot of companies seem stuck in the 19th century – sounds like your eldest son found himself in one of those companies!

This is too close to the knuckle.

Ouch. Luckily my place of employment isn’t this bad, but I have heard of some that are, if not quite as blatant.

I wanna laugh, but I can’t because this is way too real!
Well done, Trent.

Trent, I *love* this. You’ve nailed the culture here.

Thanks. I do think this culture is very deeply embedded and “training” often does as much good in real life as it does in this story.

I’ve found that there is such a dissonance between what they say and what they do. Oh the stories I could tell and I’m sure you could also.

I recently read that a lot of companies that do thinks like diversity training just to check a box actually have the opposite effect and make the existing culture even more entrenched.

I think a lot of it is getting better, but the culture is very deeply entrenched. I read a BBC article that companies that do diversity training just to check a box end up doing more harm than causing even more divisions within the company. The top management tier in the US is still overwhelming white male and their is a culture to keep it that way. And don’t even talk about the huge shift because of the last US administration… But it is changing, and hopefully will continue to get better.

Yes, I can understand your point! The last administration and Trump took the country back several decades in term of acceptance and tolerance.
