The Weekly Smile for the 18th of April, 2022 #weeklysmile

Hi all!

Last week was a nice Spring week. Flowers were blooming and there are buds on the trees. It was pretty warm – I wore a short sleeve shirt and no jacket a few days. I ran with shorts and t-shirt (no sweats). I took a few very long walks in the woods, including some long dog walks (mostly just Fiyero when there is any length). I did a little outside work, like raking (our back patio collects leaves all winter, as does a few other places in the yard).

It wasn’t just all Spring, though. I’ve been alone in the house with just the cats the past few days and the cats are always worthy of a smile or two.

Yes, they like the dogs (well, Grace might not) and the dogs love them. Idina sometimes acts like Tiberius is her puppy, and he doesn’t mind being babied a bit, particularly when he isn’t feeling well. But still, they are a little freer without the dogs.

The big difference is that they sleep with me every night. Occasionally they will brave the bed with the dogs, but without dogs, I have a cat cuddled next to me all night.

Although Tiberius and Alexander play, cuddle, etc., Grace has been getting involved in kitten stuff as well lately – enticed by the irresistible Tiberius. I very often see all three in the same room together. That being said, there is still a lot of friction between Grace and Alexander. The other day Tiberius pounced on her tail. She swatted him in a not very friendly, I’m-not-playing method. Alexander, who is afraid of Grace, took a step forward and growled very loudly. Grace pretended not to notice, but did get up and leisurely walked away.Don’t beat up on Tiberius when Alexander is around!

Alexander often walks on the banister. I really don’t like it, but what can I do? Last night I saw Tiberius on the banister for the first time. He walked to the end, turned around and walk to the head of the steps, looked uncomfortable and jumped. After a few seconds he tried to get back on, slipped and fell. My heart missed a beat! He somehow pushed himself so he didn’t fall down to the first floor, but wound up on the stairs, four steps down. I didn’t know Alexander was around, but suddenly there he is. He ran up the stairs as fast he could go and stopped and sniffed Tiberius head to tip of tail. Satisfied his brother was alright, he went up to the top of the steps, where Tiberius immediately pounced on him. They fought as if trying to kill each other, though if you looked closely, they use only paws, no claws out. I have seen Alexander do things like lick Tiberius’ hurt ear or come running when he cries that shows how much he cares for his “brother”, even if they sometimes they play ultra-rough. This checking on him after a fall was not out of character.

So those are my smiles for the week, doing outside spring things and watching cats.

What made you smile?

(A reminder – There will not be a Smile Recap post next week).

Photo below is from last August. Tiberius is the black and white kitten (about 2 months old there).

And this, with Grace, is late October when he was still trying to win her over…

****

Come on, I’m sure you smiled at least once last week.  Why don’t you share it?  I hope you can join in!

Here is list of “rules” and guiding ideas.  If you don’t have time to read it right now, just remember that this is an exercise to spread positivity.  Don’t smile about the misfortune of others.  Don’t smile in a way to excludes others.  Make sure a 12 year old can read it.

To join in, write a post to share your smile and then leave a comment on this post with a link to your smile.  Or, if you prefer, do a pingback to this post (pingback = have a link from your post to this one) (Note – pingbacks have been very inconsistent – please leave a comment :) ).   You can post any time until next Sunday evening (to be simple, I will say midnight GMT, which is 7 PM Sunday for me).  Note – I am no longer compiling the smiles into a weekly post as I used to – Sorry, I do not have time.

Goodness! watching your little kitties must give you hours of amusement & entertainment! They really are just too cute!

I am thinking of your delight in change of running gear … it must be an interesting proposition during the changing of seasons to decide when is the right time to shed the longs in favour of short, long-sleeve shirt for a tee … this all coming from one who lives in the tropics :)

The cats are great fun :)
We do have a very large range of temperatures and picking out what to wear is not always easy. Layering is the key. Also, I cross country ski, so I wear the same clothing for running in the very cold as I do when I cross country ski. So it is these transition times that are hard – do I throw on a sweater and possibly sweat real bad or go without and possibly hit a windy spot where I freeze?
      Have a great weekend.

I’m so glad Tiberius is okay – you must have had a heart attack! I watched two of our cats go over the railing and land on the first floor when I was growing up (one jumped up and pounced on the other) – both ran away after they landed and lived many more years, so I believe what they say about cats always landing on their feet, but I swear watching it took 10 years off my life.

Yikes, sounds scary, and exactly what I don’t want to see! And, of course, since Tiberius has discovered he can get up on the banister, he has been doing it every time I go to that part of the house! Look what I can do, Daddy…

Our cats are always named for royalty – When Grace came in, she was already named (Gracie), so she became “Grace Kelly”, who was an actress turned (real) princess. Alexander is named for “The Great”. Tiberius came in as “James” – we could have changed it (he was young enough) but decided on James Tiberius Kirk, called “Tiberius”, so he is both royalty and the captain of a starship…

Cats are great and can easily make me smile. I have been saying recently that the Universe is not big enough to contain all of Tiberius’ cuteness ;) Of course nothing against dogs, and I think I may have done more “dog smiles” than “cat smiles”, but this week belongs to the cats…

Cats can be exhausting… One thing is that the sometimes demand to sleep right on top of me, not next to me. How does that work? But then, even Alexander is lighter than my Boxer, Fiyero, and he tries to sleep right on top of me most nights, so I do get more sleep when the dogs are away, even with cats right on top of me ;)
