Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I’ll get you a large mug of super strong dark roast, a cuppa tea or some hot cocoa. It is a little chilly out there and the wind is nasty, but, out of the wind, the sun feels great. Let’s sit and chat. Oh, where are we? Some of you may recognize the photo at the top as being from Cape Cod.
I spent most of the week here on the Cape. My sister and her husband were visiting from Ohio. Not actually with me, but at a time share about 4 miles away. I met them for dinner on Tuesday, we did stuff together on Wednesday and Thursday and then they drove home on Friday. Yes, I did take Wednesday through Friday off of work.
I did a few very long walks, most by myself (including this morning), but some with my sister. On the walks I saw osprey, snowy egrets, great egrets, great blue herons, many types of ducks, several types of geese, several types of cormorants, swan, loons, osprey, hawks, falcon and a bald eagle. There were tons of people around looking at some glossy ibis, which I also saw – my photos aren’t very good, so I won’t share. There were other things, like a very pregnant racoon just off of one trail.
I also played tourist with my sister and brother in law a little. Amongst other things, we drove down to Falmouth to see the Nobska Light. This is as far south on Cape Cod as you can get and Martha’s Vineyard is very close – there is a great view of the island from the lighthouse. I think I have been in Falmouth one other time in my life, quite a few years ago, and that was just to catch the ferry to Martha’s that leaves Woods Hole. Not a lot of other excitement. Our major activity was eating, so… And when I have been on my own it has been far too windy to kayak. It was a cold and windy week…
That is about it. Despite the wind, I will be out and about most of the day, so I need to get started.

We are like that here as we only visit places when visitors are in town, as I was reading in the comments here. We need to plan some outings now and again. I Love the lighthouse, my sister loves them too and has a lighthouse collection of sorts. Thank you for the coffee on the Cape! Maybe the weather will settle down so you can get some kayaking in soon. Have a great week!

My sister wanted to see all of the lighthosues on Cape Cod, which she did on the day I was working. But there were a couple left, including this one… I think everyone is guilty of not going all of the sights in their area unless they have visitors that want to see them. Thanks for stopping by! I love lighthouses, but I love the tall thin ones. I hate when it is a building with a light on top. That is not a lighthouse to me LOL!

I guess a building with a light on top is literally a “light house” ;) Yeah, I tend to like the tall, thin ones the best and the buildings that have a light on the top the least, but they are all cool..

Both short work weeks and time with the family are great, and when they can be combined… The population density is so much higher on Cape Cod than where I live in New Hampshire, yet I do see so much more wildlife.

That’s a beautiful lighthouse! So different from the ones in Ireland, which are higher and look more sturdy somehow.
Living on a hill near the sea in West Cork, I know all about strong winds and it’s so annoying! We’ve enjoyed some less windy days now finally. Very nice indeed! I hope you’ll have a good week.

There are several of these 150+ year old cast iron lighthouses around, but I like the tall, slender ones made of brick with a heavy plaster on the outside better. Each of those is more distinctive. (Some are stone as well). The cast iron houses tend to be somewhat squat, like this one, but it is on a bluff high above the water.

David and I were at a lighthouse a few years back in Jamestown, he just told me. I thought it was the same light house, they are both very similar. https://www.beavertaillight.org/

I’ve been to Newport a few times, but not Jamestown. A lot of New England lighthouses are very similar and I’ve seen a handful that look a lot like this one, close enough that I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart without someone telling me which is which… That being said, I think the one on the link you have is a bit more distinctive, but still very much in keeping with the New England lighthouse. Falmouth is pretty close Jamestown as the seagull flies, though a lot farther by road!

I had always wanted to take a boat out to the lighthouse in New London CT. I used to live down that way.

If I saw that one it was many, many years ago… I spent a few weeks in that same area of CT my freshman year of college but since then have spent very little time there besides driving through, so I don’t know that coast very well. However, being there (Groton) is one of the things that drew me to New England when the opportunity came up.
