I lived there until I was six.
We just rented the ancient museum-like house.
I have clear memories about the place, but many are based on childish fantasies.
I remember my brother and sister talking about a flying saucer landing at the adjacent school and I half remember seeing it as well.
There was the little old lady at the spinning wheel. Did I see her or was it just the suggestion repeated over and over by older siblings?
The town has changed so much, but the house is still there.
I wonder if the spinning wheel is as well…

Yes, based on reality. I don’t remember seeing the flying saucer, but I member all three of my siblings talking about it for years after the event. I don’t really remember the spinning wheel in the attic, but I remember telling my neighbor that I saw it moving by itself and I know I believed it, even if I now don’t have the image (I was not allowed in the attic, which is a kid magnate). I will not say how old I am, but let’s just say Jimi and Janis were still alive when we moved…
A walk down memory lane is always fun. A child’s creative and vivid imagination is seen through the eyes of an adult. Well done!

It is fun trying to see things from a child’s point of view, and doing it from my own memories from when I was 5 is even more fun :)

Awesome story and even better reality to go with it. y interesting.
Hope things with you are going well, Trent.

Thanks, Rowena. I have written a few stories about that time in my life, though never the “supernatural” side (maybe I should…) and have thought about making a semi-fictional, semi-factual book of short stories form those years.

Going back down memory lane…what an adult remembers as a child…when I think of the house I spent my first 10 years in, I thought the back garden was huge! It was in fact small but plentiful with veggies and flowers. My younger-self memory saw the world as a whole lot bigger.

It isn’t just what we experience but how we interpret it – my memories from living in the house were made when I was 5 (or younger!), so talking to others that were there (older siblings, parents), I did misinterpret so much! It is fun to explore, though.

Oh Dear, have you never thought about going to that house and asking them about the spinning wheel?

I think the family that owned the house sold it in the late 80s or 90s. My guess is they cleared all of the antiques out at that time (the antiques in the house were most likely worth as much as the house itself…). But, no never really thought about asking about it.

Love this! I would think that living in a place like that would stir a child’s imagination. Flying saucers and spinning wheels sound like great fun to me. :)

Old houses are great and it is possible that living in this one at such an impressionable age is why I love them so much, even if some of those memories of flying saucers (funny, we didn’t call it a UFO) and self-spinning wheels may not be what really happened…

You’re probably right.😊

Lovely take on the prompt. Those memories….sigh. I’m sure they are at least grounded in fact, perhaps with a child’s spin.

My guess is a touch of fact, a lot of suggestion (older siblings talk about the flying saucer, so why not?) and a lot of childish imagination. Thanks.

Memory is an odd thing, particularly memories made at such a young age and so many decades ago. Thanks.

I am sure…. I have seen the exterior of the house in recent years – still looks like it did decades ago, but I’m sure the interior has changed quite a bit.

I am sure the spinning wheel is still there, it sort of completes the story.

It must be. If if not part of the story, I think the house is still owned by the same family, so why wouldn’t they keep it?

My teenage home was ancient, and full of many possibilities, the flying saucers came later, yes I enjoyed reading your story

Creepy, all the more so being based on your own experience. Intriguing.

Well, dim memories of possible experiences.. lol, though I do have a few very clear memories of things about as creepy, even if no aliens were involved ;)

A lovely piece Trent. Fact or fantasy, I’d like to believe my all memories are real no matter how unlikely they seem!

I’d love to believe all of those ancient memories, and that some of the oddest ones are true, well, perhaps the far fetched ones are as well… Thanks, Kieth.

This felt like a memory, Trent.
I would wonder, too!

Some of those early life memories are hard to decipher, but I just put a special tag on them all – in the mind of a small child…

Sounds like the perfect tag to me :)

Sometimes it’s hard to sort of what is an actual memory and what is something we think we remember. Well done.

It is sometimes difficult to know what is really true, particularly when you go that far back. Thanks.

Need to go & investigate.
I like the flying-saucer reference. I am sure I have spotted some! :)
There is so much associated with childhood memories.

I may have spotted one or two. Since I couldn’t identify them, I will call them UFOs without being wrong ;)
Although we don’t bring them up often, those childhood memories still form part of the core of who we became.

It is possible that memories made by a four year old more than five decades ago are not the most reliable… Thanks.

Dear Trent,
And if one remembers who Jimi or Janis were, they can do the math. ;) I’m sure I’m older. Not saying by home much. Fun story.

If they know the names, I don’t care if they know my age… lol. I have written other stories about that time period – the division was such a huge one for me it was like an entirely different life.
