Part of my ride home from Cape Cod on Saturday was in the cold pouring rain. There were Christmas songs by indie rock bands on the radio. I thought “I need to write a Christmas song!”
In the mean time, there were so many jerks on the road that evening, and one super huge jerk tailgating me for miles. At times I could see his ultra angry face. I really thought he was going to pull out a machine gun and start shooting at any moment.
By the time I got home I had all of the words and the melody for a new, dark, Christmas song.
I played around with it Sunday morning and then recorded all of the instrument parts Sunday afternoon and evening. I recorded the vocals after work on Monday and did the video Monday evening.
OK, a lot of issues – it was a rush job! Truthfully, I don’t know if I can sing any better – my voice is always bad, so… Anyway, here it is Tuesday and I am sharing it with you. (It is dark, but with hope at the end.)
(Click here if you don’t see the video below)
I hope you enjoyed the video.
Anyway, music nerd stuff. Most of the sounds are the Prophet Rev 2, though the main bass is Behringer Poly-D. And, funny thing, try counting to it. lol. Not easy? I cal it in Five-Four, but a big chunk of it is actually alternating two-four and three-four. I say that since it often starts on “Four” of the Five-Four measure, which would be “One” of a Two-Four measure.
No idea what I said? Oh well, music nerd stuff.
I plan on doing a slightly less dark Christmas song some day.
I hope you enjoyed :)

Have been making songs in my teens, and stopped for 40 Years, but now my voice sounds like a female you:):) Never thought on making a Christmas song, but I like the melody – merry Christmas!

I play and write a lot of music, but don’t sing much any more. Someday I may take lessons so I can tolerate my voice a little more and perhaps write more lyrics :) Anyway, you may see this pop up again – this isn’t this weeks “Smile post” and it is possible I will use it for next week. (This week was another “It’s the small stuff that counts” post).

Thanks, Sadje. Not sure if I would call my voice nice, but I do like the melody ;)

Brilliant ‘five-four’, my friend! And yes, driving around these days has become an …edgy endeavor!

Have you heard the story behind Genesis’ Turn it On Again? This was similar – I thought it was 4-4 or perhaps 3-4 (Silver Bells is 3-4), so was surprised when I sat down and couldn’t make what I had been playing work until I tired 5-4! (Of course the tune mentioned above was 13-4, but that’s another story ;) ).
Yes, driving can be a nightmare! but at least this time it inspired a song.

I know someone who probably is familiar with the story (you can have a wild guess! 😉). I usually find out my tempos after I’m done with a piece! 🤣
Indeed, it inspired a brilliant song!

I can guess… lol. Yeah, it’s when I start working with a metronome that I figure out what I did as far as meter and tempo. Thanks!

Mike R: (plays guitar)
Phil C: Did you know that is in 13-4?
Mike R: No it isn’t, it’s 4-4
Phil C: (proves you don’t argue rhythm with a drummer)
Entire Club going world, early 1980s: Why do I always trip up when dancing to this song?

Hurrah for taking a lousy experience driving back from the Cape and turning it into a song!
